It wasnamed for General David Wilkinson who had led American forces against Native Americans during their 1789 campaign along Lake Michigan's southern shoreline. The City of Chicago was founded on April 1st 1847 by Mayor John D'Arcy Beale with land grant from Governor Pritzker. On December 15th 1850 a fire destroyed much of downtown Chicago leaving behind a series of warehouses which still stand today including First National Bank Building which served as the first building inChicago Ziegfeld Theatre complex . Kankakee was annexed by Chicago on February 11th 1912 but its municipal government continued until 1915 when it became part of Douglas Park District . In 1916 construction began on State Street between Randolph Road and South Greenbush Avenue which would later become home to Northwestern University In 1927 when Douglas Park District merged into Cook County ,Kankakee became one of its five wards .
