Justice, Illinois history is one of the most complicated in the United States. The state has a rich and diverse history that can be traced back to its earliest days as a territory. Justice, Illinois was founded on July 8, 1812 by James K. Polk and John Quincy Adams as the first U.S. state after the Mexican-American War. It was named for George Washington’s home state of Virginia, which had been ceded to Mexico in 1848 in what was known as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. However, when California became an American colony in 1850, it took away all but 2 percent of James K. Polk’susable bits of Texas (the rest being given to Mexico). In 1853, President Franklin D. Roosevelt transferred jurisdiction over Justice from New York to Illinois because he felt that New York City lacked jurisdiction over what were then rural areas in western Illinois (now Cook County). The first courts established within our borders were three justice Courts hearing civil cases: The District Court for Cook County (1853), The Circuit Court for Kane County (1858), and The Supreme Judicial Court for DuPage County (1868). These court structures evolved out of necessity due to lack of other forms of appellate or judicial review available at that time within our boundaries- only circuit court decisions could be appealed directly to the U.S. Supreme Court at that time! Since then, there have been numerous changes and additions to Justice including: In 1971–1972; A new trial law code replaced all prior criminal laws with a new system called “structured case proceedings” which allowed defendants greater opportunities for successful argument before judges rather than having their cases tried by jurors instead; A concurrent executive power bill created administrative divisions within justice including an elected office called the Appellate Division responsible for appellate review; In 1994–1995; justices were re-appointed without lay hearings or public input following impeachment charges brought against them by legislators; In 1998–1999; Judge Richard Posner became Chief Judge after serving as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General during Bill Clinton’s presidency
Justice, Illinois history began in 1837 when the state of Illinois was created from part of the Indiana Territory. The United States government agreed to create a new territory as part of the Compromise of 1850, which ended the Mexican-American War.1 As part of this deal, California was added to the United States and Mexico ceded lands east of the Mississippi River to form Illinois.2 The first settlers in what is now Illinois were Englishmen who moved westward from Oxford, England in 1803.3 They founded an agricultural society called The Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church in Vandalia (now DeKalb).4 In 1818, they erected a log cabin known as "The Nauvoo House" on a bend in the Wabash River near Quincy.5 Joseph Smith, one of these Englishmen, built this cabin as his headquarters during his Mormon missionary journey from England to America.6 In 1830, Nauvoo was destroyed by a fire that started within its walls.7 This event marked the beginning of what is now known as Missouri's Native American history; however, Nauvoo also served as an example for European Americans who had Come West and established themselves among Native American people.8 In 1834, Joseph Smith again erected a log cabin at Winter Quarters (now Kankakee), located about 50 miles northwest of Nauvoo.9 This site became known as Independence Hall because it served as both a temporary home for Congress during their brief stay there in December 179510 and also because General Anthony Wayne’s forces used it during their battle against Jesse Lynch on November 3rd, 181211
