Johnson was an experienced lawyer and governor of New York during the American Revolution. He helped lead America through her difficult time and fought for its independence. In 1834, John Prentice Chase became the first Ulysses S. Grant appointee as justice on the Chicago Circuit Court bench after he won election as Mayor of Chicago and then serving three terms as Governor from 1841-1845. When Grant took office in 1868, he became President Ulysses S. Grant’s Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court which ruled that Reconstruction laws were unconstitutional – this made Chicago one of only five southern cities to have full voting rights under federal law following Reconstruction (the others being Montgomery, Alabama; Nashville, Tennessee; Richmond Virgilia; Jacksonville Florida). When President James Buchanan made his decision to end Reconstruction in 1865 due to political correctness at home and Lincoln’s increasing popularity abroad, Chase resigned his seat on the high court effective 1 November 1865 but continued to serve out his term until 30 September 1869 when he died suddenly at age 70 years old while on vacation at what is now Telluride Colorado Springs Resort & Spa near Aspen Colorado
