Joliet's first coffee roaster was built in 1892 by Father John Ziegler. It was located on State Street in Joliet. The business operated until 1914 when it closed because of the high cost of operations. In 1915, Father John Ziegler's son, Joseph Ziegler founded the second Joliet coffee roaster, which operated on Elmira Road until 1951. In 1922, Father John Ziegler's grandson purchased the business from his father and continued to run it until his death in 1978. From 1978-1991, Homer Weisenberger ran the business. In 1991, Don Hirsch bought the business and continued running it until he died in 2006. Currently, Tim Easley runs the business with assistance from his wife Lisa Easley and sons Kevin (Kurt) and Patrick (Pete). The first commercial Arabica beans were brought to Joliet from Rome by Antonio Vaccaro in 1857. By 1897 there were four different types of Arabica beans being grown: full-bodied Robusta; medium-bodied Italiano; light roast; or " wrapper." These different types of Arabica beans would be used for different blends that would be sold throughout America at various prices point between $2-$4 per pound depending on regionality/blendage/style of purchase(full-bodied Robusta=$2/$3 per pound while Italiano=$4-$5 per pound while light roast=$2-$3 per pound). A blend called American Export blend was created in 1929 at our current location by blending two brands: Dutch Bros./Robusta & Decaf/Italiano blends together ($1.50/.75 Per Pound). This blend would continue to be available through 1984 when it became known as Brown Swiss Medal Roast Blend #1 ($1/$2 Per Pound)). In 1984 Brown Swiss Medal Roast Blend #2 became available which included: Dutch Bros./Robusta & Decaf/Italiano blends together($0.$1 Per Pound), French Press Blends ($0.$0 Per Pound), Ethiopian Coffee ($10 cents each bag), Java Spices (~$0 each bag) and Peppermint extract (~$0 each bag). After this change all other Blends were renamed after individual items such as American Export Blend (Brown Swiss Medal) or Swissroast (Patriots Oroiran). In 1990 all products but Ethiopia Coffee were discontinued due to an FDA ruling that caffeine could not come from certain locations within Africa despite religious exemption granted earlier for Ethiopia Coffee industry under another name!
