The Joliet Army National Guard is an all-volunteer force of about 24,000 men and women that is present in a dozen Illinois counties. The unit has been in existence since 1871. It was originally organized as a regiment of militia called the “Garrison Companies” and was reorganized into an infantry battalion on April 12, 1907. The battalion became part of the 5th Infantry Division in 1942 and served with distinction during World War II. In 1947, the battalion was redesignated the 9th Infantry Regiment and served as a garrison unit until its activation as an army National Guard unit in 1961. Since then, it has participated in every major American military campaign since Vietnam including Operation Desert Storm (1991), Operation Enduring Freedom (2001) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003). In 2003, Joliet Armory was donated to the state by Rear Admiral Thomas J. Donilon who had been commander of United States Central Command at the time. Since activation, Joliet Armory has played host to visiting dignitaries such as Presidents George H.W.
