Jacksonville is the tenth-largest city inDuPage County and the ninth-largest city in Illinois. It lies on the eastern border of DuPage County and part of Kane County. The Counties of DuPage and Kane are named for General James K. Polk who fought in the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. The first European settler in what is now Jacksonville was Nicholas Denison who arrived on April 20, 1819 with his family from Boston, Massachusetts. He built a cabin on some land he had been granted by General James K. Polk near present day downtown Jacksonville. The first post office was established in Jacksonville on July 15, 1820 by George Ladd as Postmaster at Bushnell’s store which stood on what is now Lincoln Avenue east of present day Main Street Jacksonville became an important town due to its location along the western edge of Chicago where transportation improved following Indian Wars and other conflicts that created new markets for goods and people across America.
