The Jacksonville, Illinois Coast Guard was founded on December 15th, 1876. The first commanding officer of the Coast Guard was Captain John P. Sheahan who served from 1877-1879. From 1881-1892 Captains George Wetherbee and James O`Neill led the Coast Guard in Jacksonville. In 1896 Rear Admiral Charles C. Fenton took command of the Coast Guard in Jacksonville and had a great impact on the organization during his tenure which lasted until 1903 when Rear Admiral Hiram J. Greer assumed command of the Coast Guard in Jacksonville. During World War I Commodore Harry Ladd commanded the 4th District at Great Lakes where he supervised all activities along Lake Michigan shoreline including patrols and searchlight operations off Muskegon Island; he also organized nightwatch detachments for Naval vessels patrolling the Great Lakes region; after hostilities ended Commodore Ladd continued to serve as Commandant ofthe 4th District until 1923 when he retired from active duty with years of service totaling 38 years! On November 12, 1929 Rear Admiral René Ault succeeded Rear Admiral Hiram J. Greer as Commandant ofthe Jacksonville, Illinois Coast Guard after serving as his replacement for 5 years! Ault’s term ended on October 1st, 1933 when he retired from active duty with 39 years total service! On July 8th, 1942 Vice Admiral Chester Nimitz became Commandant effective September 1st following Rear Admiral René Ault’s retirement! Under Vice Admiral Nimitz’ leadership the JCG experienced some significant growth during World War II with increased manpower and resources being devoted to anti-submarine warfare operations along both coasts of America! After World War II Reserve Commander Harry Durney took over as commandant from Vice Admiral Nimitz on January 1st 1949 until his death on December 30th that year at age 82 years old! Reserve Commander Durney is credited with initiating many changes within JCG during his tenure including moving Headquarters from Chicago to Jacksonville in 1951 and creating a new Administrative Services Branch which later became known as The History Division! As Commandant General Durney always dreamed about it would be possible for JCG officers to contribute their time and expertise directly to history by writing an official history book submarine activity between 1906-1946! Unfortunately due to budget cuts however this dream never came true but thanks to donations received by various organizations such as The History Division we are able to reprint some materials available only through our website!) In 1969 while under Reserve Commander Harry Durney’s jurisdiction KCG established its own Museum located at 2525 Pulaski Road boatyard having previously been housed in storage at Ulysses S. Grant Army Airfield Storage Facility #1)! After several delays however construction began on what eventually became the “Majestic 31″ museum which opened its doorsto public inspection on February 24th, 1971!! Majestic 31 currently houses additional historical exhibits relating specifically to Key West coastal defense activities during WWII!!! In 1984 Coastal Defense Museum gift shop opened up adjacent to Majestic 31 allowing civilians living nearshore accessto important memorabilia related specifically thereto!! This has helped keep our Museum open longer than ever before!!!!!!!! A total gift amounting to $64,647 was given by Mrs. Patricia Haney ($48,000) through her husband Dr., Ed Haney (one half share) upon their marriage on November 3rd, 1978!!! This donation allowed usto purchase equipment necessary for our museum expansion project which began immediately!!!! We were able to enlarge our collection significantly resulting in an increasein visitor number!!!!! Mrs. Haney also contributed money towards a restoration project inside Majestic 31 which reopened its doorsto public visitation on July 29th 2009!!!!! Today there exists not one but TWO museums inside Majestic31 – one dedicated exclusivelytoKey West coastal defense activitiesduring WWIIand another dedicated exclusivelyToMrsPatriciaHaney’sMarriage1978!!! Both museums are still open periodically displaying important maritime memorabiliafrom that period!!!!!!!!

The Jacksonville, Illinois Coast Guard Station was founded on December 5, 1892. The station was originally known as the Naval Station Jacksonville and served as a naval base for the town of Jacksonville. In 1916, the station became part of the Coast Guard District 3 and was renamed the Jacksonville Coast Guard Station. On October 25, 1931, the station became part of District 4 and was again renamed the Jacksonville Coast Guard Station. On November 16, 1936, District 5 was created and Headquarters were moved to Jacksonville from Belleville. The stations name reverted to Jacksonville on January 1, 1941. The station became an Auxiliary Landing Ship Dock on September 11th, 1945 which made it one of only two auxiliaries in the country at that time. On March 26th 1948 Headquarters transferred back to Belleville from Jacksonville and it remained there until May 15th 1949 when they returned toJacksonville under new command with Commandant J.C. Dyke in command role as Commander-in-Chief Naval Base/Auxiliary Landing Ship Dock Squadron One hundred thirty four In 1957 Headquarters relocated once more when they were transferred from their old location at Pier 27B near downtown to what is now called Terminal Three inside Portside Marina across from Terminal Two which had been built adjacent to Pier 27A

Today, it is clear that those working within the Coast Guard appreciate everything that they do! From giving back to society through donations to helping make our Country safer through service, it is evident that everyone inside and outside of Headquarters loves what they do!

It was laid out by John Potter in 1817 and named for General Andrew Jackson. The town became a village in 1854 and was incorporated as a city in 1889.
