In 1840, Jacksonville became the county seat of Kane County. The city's growth accelerated during the late 19th century as waves of immigrants arrived to work on new railroads and develop businesses in the physical plant and agriculture industries in what would become known as "the agricultural belt". By 1900 Jacksonville had an estimated population of 25,000 people and was considered one of America's most important industrial cities. During World War II Jacksonville played an important role as a naval base for military operations throughout Europe and Japan; it also became home to two General Motors plants that produced Liberty cars and other products for American Forces Overseas (AFO). The production facilities were later moved to Flint Michigan where they remain today. In recent years Jacksonville has experienced declines in its population due to commuting difficulties from suburban areas and joblessness among local veterans.
