Jacksonville, Illinois is a small town in the heart of the Quad Cities area of Western Illinois. The population was 5,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago-Naperville-Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Jacksonville were French traders and missionaries who founded a trading post on an island in the river near present day downtown Jacksonville on November 3, 1795. The post served as a base from which they conducted their missionary work and trade with Native Americans. In 1802, American pioneers arrived in what is now Jacksonville and developed land around what is now Bankers Hill Cemetery. On October 12, 1836, Jacksonville became a full city when it was incorporated as a result of an act of the state legislature. In 1843, Jacksonville built its first schoolhouse for use by students in nearby Carbondale. A new high school was completed in 1907 and named after John Cranch Hennepin (1819–92), one of America's most notable entrepreneurs and business leaders during that time period. Constitution Hall was built between 1911 and 1912 as president Franklin D. Roosevelt's home during his time as Mayor of Chicago before he moved to New York City to become president; it has been used as a museum since then. Jacksonville experienced significant growth during World War II with several large-scale manufacturing plants being erected including the Calumet Engine Plant (now retired) on State Street just north of downtown; Beechcraft Aircraft Corporation's original headquarters building located on Lee Avenue across from Veterans Memorial Park; Chrysler Automobiles' plant south of town near Interstate 90; and Ford Motor Company's plant east off I-90 just north of downtown which produced over $2 billion worth of products for America during World War II alone..
