Huntley, Illinois is a small town in Kendall County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Huntley is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Huntley was platted on May 10, 1871 by J.W. Hunt and Wm. Hite. It took its name from General James A. Hunt who fought in the American Civil War and achieved distinction as a battlefield general. The original home of the town's first post office was located three miles (5 km) southeast of present-day Huntley on the south side of Union Pacific Railroad tracks passing through what is now Kendall County; that office closed on February 17, 1907 due to lack of mail volume from residents living so close to one another. The first store in Huntley opened its doors on November 6, 1872 with GEOFFREY CRAWFORD as proprietor and Alfred Erikson as cashier/bookkeeper; it was also known as "The Saloon". In 1875 John Fenton built a gristmill which became an important factor for local economy until it ceased production in 1915 when electric power came to Huntley via Kansas City Cutoff (KCC). Huntley is a town in Morgan County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The community was named for General Israel Huntley, who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. Huntley is located on the south side of Cook County. Huntley was first settled in 1847 by Irish immigrants from County Clare. In 1870, it became part of Morgan County and lost its identity as a separate village until 1914 when it regained its name as an incorporated town. One of the earliest businesses in Huntley was a store that operated on Center Street from 1851 to 1861. A post office operated at Huntley from 1857 to 1871; it was renamed Glen Ellyn after John Q. Glenmore, one of its trustees during this time. The first school in Huntley opened in October 1855; it taught children grades one through six while also serving as an academy for boys between ages 7 and 12 years old until 1932 when girls were admitted into this program too. A second school opened in February 1860 on Third Street; both schools served grade seven through twelve students until 1938 when girls were admitted into all but grade two classes due to changes made to public education regulations by then-Governor Abraham Lincoln following his Great Chicago Fire Relief Program which led to increased enrollment at high schools throughout Illinois including Huntleys (the only high school outside of Chicago). In 1916, Hughes School moved from its original location on Elm Avenue near the train tracks to what is now east Side Drive off South Main Street because space had been allocated for a new junior high school which would have seated 800 students within ten feet of each other instead of 400 feet separating them single-sex classrooms with no opportunity for natural light or ventilation (a feature common at that time among pre-war Midwestern public schools). During World War I there were several hundred civilian employees working at Camp Morton which included many women who cooked troops' food and shared rooms with men while they slept during these difficult times; some sources claim that up to 80% of all military tents used during World War I were furnished and camped by women! Huntley was founded in 1853 by James Hunt and his wife, Jane. At the time, it was one of the most rural areas in Illinois. Huntley became a prosperous township after being selected as the location for a new courthouse in 1859. The town's growth continued during the Civil War years when many farmers moved to Huntley to fight on behalf of the Union side. In 1865, Huntley became a borough and later an city. In 1970, it merged with neighboring Aurora to form Aurora-Huntley.
