In 1916, Huntley's first high school was built and it served students from grades kindergarten through eighth grade until it closed in 1984. One of the most significant moments in Huntley's military history occurred during World War II when the United States entered into partnership with Great Britain to fight together against Nazi Germany. As part of this partnership, Huntley residents donated goods and services both within and outside of their own community. During World War II, many residents volunteered their time and effort to help contribute to patriotic causes such as airlifting food supplies to Allied troops stationed abroad or working on munitions plants throughout Cook County. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Huntley has been home to farmers and ranching for many years. The first settlers were John Hunt and his wife Elizabeth (née Hickey). They arrived in 1814 from Maryland. The first post office was established in 1816, and the name changed to Huntley in 1842 after John's father-in-law, Arthur Hickey. The discovery of oil in nearby Crystal Lake led to an increase in business around Huntley during World War I; however, much of this activity center around farming rather than production of oil products. In 1930s local businesses such as J C Penney & Co., Standard Oil Co., Armoury Supply Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., Wrigley packinghouse and Brewster Grain Elevator all closed their doors because of the Great Depression; however, soon afterwards new businesses began sprang up including two milliners - Mrs Ethel Hegedus and her sister Alice Hegedus - who opened a dressmaking store at 21 Main Street before going out into other businesses such as grocery stores Chenery’s Meat Market, Harry’s Hamburgers etc.; according to historian Vernon McGee these women “represented one aspect of industrial revival that took hold throughout Cook county during those years” (McGee 1969: vii).
