Huntley, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Huntley was James Haddon on July 1, 1827. A post office called Huntley was established in 1829, and remained in operation until1877. The firstagers were unknown to early European explorers who entered the area during the Prairie Schooner Expedition of 1833-35. A small community developed around what is now Huntley after wagon trains started traveling through the area for salt and other goods in the 1830s. In 1836, John Prentice founded a sawmill at what is now Vermilion Township. By 1840, Huntley had a schoolhouse and two stores which provided much needed economic stability for local farmers during an era when corn prices were high and production was low due to drought conditions across much of Illinois In 1850, Jesse Buel built a gristmill on Roundabout Creek near present-day White Bluff Road east of Huntley Buel operated it until 1862 when he sold it to Isaac Denton Denton took over operations from his father and ran it until 1870 when he sold it to Wm Cranch Cranch operated it until 1902 when he donated it to the State of Illinois . In 1912, Lathrop House became home to one of the first public schools in McLean County . That same year also saw construction of Huntingdon Chapel – now known as First Baptist Church – as well as additions such as a blacksmith shop and barn which doubled as classrooms and living quarters for students . The village grew rapidly with new single family homes being erected along Route 66 (then State Route 52) between 1912 and 1916; this period also marked increased trade between Huntley and surrounding communities including Springfield’s commercial district on Main Street . During World War I there was significant growth with enrollment rising from five students per teacher in 1915-16 to twenty by 1920; following World War II , however ,Huntleys economy declined significantly due largely to decimation of agriculture following World War II .
