The Air Force has been a big part of the community in Huntley, Illinois for many years. The USAF Academy is located in the town and since its inception, the Air Force has played a major role in Huntsville. Air Force gift history began with World War I when General George S. Patton was stationed here as Commanding Officer of IX Fighter Squadron #1. Patton donated his airplane hangar to the Air Service in 1918 and it became known as “Patton’s Hangar”. In 1951, Colonel James Ewing gifted an A-6 Intruder jet trainer to the service from his home garage. This was followed by an F-4 Phantom II fighter aircraft donation from General Curtis LeMay in 1957 which became known as “LeMay’s Aircraft”. In 1972, General William Kean donated an F-14 Tomcat fighter aircraft to the service from his home ranch. This was followed by another F-14 Tomcat donation in 1978 from Colonel John Melson which became known as “Melson’s Aircraft”. It wasn't until 1984 when one of Huntley's most famous residents, Colonel James "Shane" Reevesceived a gift that would change airforce gifting forever – The F-15 Eagle! Shane donated his entire airframe and engines to the USAF Academy for use as a research aircraft during their construction program – this was also known as "Reeves' Raiders". Since then, colonel Reeves' generosity has continued unabated – he has given away over 100 aircraft including 16 Eagle jets and 12 Black Hawk helicopters! In addition, Reeves endowed several scholarships at USAAF Academy and neighboring universities across Illinois (including Northwestern Illinois University). These scholarships help students pay for tuition and other educational expenses while attending USAAF Academy or nearby institutions of higher learning!

He ordered General Curtis LeMay to start creating a strategic air force with Boeing jets and fighter planes. The first airplanes were bought by the USAF in 1949 and became known as the “B-47 Flying Fortress”. The B-47 was used for bombing raids over Japan during World War II. The USAF grew quickly and by 1957 had over 1,000 planes and 1200 personnel. The Strategic Air Command (SAC) was established in 1958 to manage nuclear weaponsresources and act as an umbrella organization for all US nuclear forces. SACs bombers were used in operations such as Operation Northwoods which simulated an attack on Cuba. In 1961, Presidents John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson launchedOperation Neptune’s Spear which aimed to acquire thenestablishments in Pakistan using destabilizing measures including bombings of targets there thatUS intelligence thought might be related to nuclear proliferation within that country or its neighbors China, Cuba, South Vietnam and North Korea). This action led to America entering into a Cold War with Russia that lasted for more than 60 years! The name was chosen because it sounded like an American defense against British planes. The Second World War started and within a few months of its creation, The Flying Corps had become part of the United States Armed Forces. In May 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9302 which gave RAF flying capabilities to American forces in Europe as part of Operation Overlord. From then until 1945, American pilots flew combat missions over Nazi Germany and other Axis countries throughout World War II.

Huntley is named after Hiram Huntley, a U.S. Representative from Ohio who served from 1847 to 1851 and 1865 to 1867.
