The original town was located on a small island in the river near the present day intersection of I-70 and U.S. 131. The island was used as a dumping ground for trash and garbage from nearby towns, so it is not surprising that the town's first name was "Dumping Ground Island." Homewood grew quickly thanks to its location and natural resources. In 1886, the town acquired land along Indianapolis' east side to build a railroad station. The town also built several homes for workers who used the land for farming or ranching purposes. In 1954, Homewood became an incorporated municipality with a population of around 9,000 people. After years of growth, Homewood reached its current size in 2000 when it amalgamated with neighboring Village of Winona and annexed part of the city of Evanston

He played an important role in helping toturn around the town after it had fallen into disrepair during the late 1800s. Other famous residents include baseball great Lou Gehrig and entrepreneur George Romney; both men were born hereabouts. Finally, there are numerous businesses located within walking distance of Homewood Village – making it easy for residents to get their day-to-day activities done without leaving their homes!
