It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on the west bank of the Chicago River. The village was organized on October 8, 1868, from parts of West Side (now Rogers Park) and South Side (now Lawndale) neighborhoods. The name originated with John Houghtaling's home on Wabash Avenue in West Side. The first postmaster was James Mapes. By 1888, there were 2 churches in Homewood: First Presbyterian and Second Methodist both founded in 1881 by Reverends George Armstrong Copley and Lewis Morris Wilson Jr., respectively. In 1886-87, a school district was formed which included Homewood; but it also included nearby North Shore Heights before that district's merger into the city of Chicago in 1987. In 1924–25, Homewood became one of many villages lost to annexation by City of Chicago; however, this loss did not prevent its growth as a suburb of Chicagoland over ensuing decades.
