It is bordered by the suburbs of Northbrook to the north, Arlington Heights to the east, Westchester to the south and South Shore to the west. The first humans living in what is now Homewood were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants near what is now Michigan Avenue and Pulaski Road. In 1847, when Indiana Territory was created from parts of Illinois and Wisconsin, homesteaders from nearby Mundelein began flowing into Indiana Territory for land massage. By 1860 there were over 1,000 residents in Homewood – including 300 African American slaves – working on 240 acres (100 hectares) of land grant from General David Logan. In 1868–69 a group of capitalists led by entrepreneur George Pullman bought 2,500 acres (900 hectares) northwest of town from Logan for $10 per acre (4 km²). The Pullman family built their first house on this property in 1870; it still stands today as one of Homewood's most important landmarks.pullman organized passenger trains between Chicago and his village until he sold all but two lines to DeKalb County Railway Company in 1901; that year also saw the opening of Homewood's first public library which served as a community center until 1978 when it moved downtown with new facilities. He donated $5 million towards research into air travel before his death in 1905. In 1907 Abraham Lincoln gave an Address on Washington Boulevard extolling "the wonderful progress made by Hometown Businesses since I left politics". This suggests that while some local businesses did close due to wartime restrictions or other causes such as economic recession, most closures were due simply to lack of opportunity at that time. In 1958 businessman Bruce Katz purchased 5% interest in Orson Bean Enterprises from Orson Bean himself for $1 million dollars making Katz one of America’s richest men. Homewood, Illinois is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 627 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Homewood were farmers and hunters who had friendly relations with the local Native American community. In 1836, prospectors discovered coal on nearby Clear Creek and began to mine it. This led to the Village of Homewood being founded in 1838 by Abram Silliman and others associated with the town of Ravenna on the east side of Chicago. In 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president, he moved from Maryland to Illinois and purchased 160 acres (72 ha) of land west of Ravenna for $10 per acre. He named this new tract "Lincoln Park". The original home of President Lincoln's family was located here until 1922 when they moved into Hyde Park across from Washington Park on State Street. After his death in 1865, his wife Mary died at home; she has been buried there since then. It took until 1892 for school District No. 2 (Cook County) to build a schoolhouse on land donated by Rev Dr Daniel Webster; this building served as a model for all future schools in that district subject to City Charter Nos 5-8 enacted that year which granted extraterritorial jurisdiction over public schools within limits set by City Councils subject only to property tax levy without representation on these bodies however each individual School District maintained its own governing body with powers regarding curriculum content instruction physical plant operation finances etc... . In 1915/16 architect Edward Haggerty designed an Art Deco style single story wood frame school building which became known as “The Lodge” after Mrs Lillian Wald’s gift to that structure prior thereto becoming known as “Homewood Elementary School”
