On July 8, 1870 Wirt received a patent for 640 acres (2 km²) including today's village of Homewood from Abraham Lincoln for $1 per acre ($ 50 worth). In 1871 homesteaders built their first homes on this tract which became known as Beaver Township after James Beavers son-in-law who helped organize settlers there. In 1872 John Lillis bought 320 acres (10 km²) along present day Elston Avenue from George Hinkle for $200 per acre ($ 10 worth). This tract became known as Hinkleown Township after him. Lillis sold his interest in Hinkleown Township to Abram Davenport in 1893 for $4 peracre ($ 40 worth). Davenport donated all but 5 square miles (16 km²) of his grant to build what would become known as Midtown Village which he named after himself and wife Lucy Addams DavenPORT Estate - that portion remaining became part of today's Homewood community center district
