In 1881, Homewood was a small community of about 1,000 people on the east side of Chicago. By 1920, it had grown to be one of the most populous neighborhoods in the city. The neighborhood is named after Henry W. Woodworth, a banker and politician who served as mayor of Chicago from 1897 to 1901 and as state treasurer from 1903 to 1907. The name "Homewood" was first used in 1892 when only a few hundred people lived there. The population of Homewood grew rapidly due to its location within walking distance of many businesses and services that madeChicago an attractive place to live. In 1922, the city built a new hospital in the area for residents with serious medical needs. This added more than 15,000 square feet (1,500 m2) to the neighborhood's commercial district and increased business activity by 100%. During World War II, Homewood became a center for munitions production because it was located near important factories that produced shells and other explosives needed for war effort. After the war ended, industry slowly died away until becoming defunct in the early 2000s. However, some companies have since reopened in Homewood such as Sears Holdings Corporation which plans to open an original Sears store in 2020 on State Street near 79th Street

Homewood was founded by John H. Homewood in 1836 as a small town on the banks of the Chicago River. The community grew rapidly, and by 1840 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1847, Homewood became a city and continued to grow. By 1870, it had 8,000 residents and was one of the largest cities in Illinois. In 1919, during World War I, Homewood joined the United States Army as an armed forces training center. It served as an important base for troops until the end of the war in 1918. From 1919 to 1929, Homewood served as the capital of Illinois. During the 1920s and 1930s, Homewood experienced significant growth thanks to its role as a centers for education and industry. In 1933, it became home to Northwestern University (now Northwestern Memorial Hospital). Additionally, in 1938-1939, HomewOOD erected what is now known as State Street Park in honor of its citizens who have made contributions to their community through work or service. Today that park is one of downtown's most popular attractions. The post-war years were tough for many small towns throughout America; however,HomewOOD refused to give up its dream of becoming a major metropolitan area like those found around Chicago or Milwaukee due to its strong industrial heritage which still resonates today among some locals who call themselves "Homewoodians." Over time this legacy morphed into something more reminiscent of current day Detroit with businesses clustering together along Woodward Avenue near Michigan Avenue while other streets such as Clarkston Boulevard serve mainly administrative functions within various government agencies located thereabouts including both City Hall and County Courthouse Buildings - all interconnected at street level with underpasses beneath them providing convenient access from any direction for employees working inside these buildings...
