The town of Homewood, Illinois was once a small community that sat on the banks of the Potomac River. The community was founded in 1835 by Nicholas Burns and his family. The Burns family came from England and started a farm in what is today's Homewood. They soon began to grow potatoes, apples, corn and other crops. In 1839, Nicholas Burns died and his wife, Martha Jane, took over the farm. She raised chickens, pigs and cows until her death in 1865. When Martha Jane's daughter became Mrs. John Fenton in 1875, she decided to move the farm to what is now known as Homewood Cemetery because it was then located on the same tract of land as their mother's grave. After Mrs. John Fenton's death in 1899, the property reverted back to its original owners - the Burns family - who continued to live there until their deaths in 1954 and 1966 respectively. The first school in Homewood was built on this property in 1836 by Mr. Hintonbaugh with help from local farmers for children living nearby on Hunting Creek Road (now US-4). That same year, a school house also burned down but thanks to donations from local people some new homes were built which still stand today as part of the village Green School District #1 . In 1840-41 another school building was added along with a graveyard for students who didn't have enough space at home or at an neighbouring churchyard (later known as Evergreen Cemetery). In 1847, an addition was made to the old schoolhouse which served as a meeting place for various village organizations including Poor Law Commissioners who would come explore homesteads upriver during those years before making recommendations about how best to improve them etcetera . A new jail/prison opened up on Seymour Street (now US-4) adjacent to where present day Fourth Street meets Park Drive around 1850-51 due partly to overcrowding inside regular jails being unable hold all those arrested during hard times such as elections or war etcetera When James Kappenberger moved into town after selling his interest in Poughkeepsie County Courthouse he donated land next door (on present day Park Drive) which later became part of Northampton Township so Kappenberger could build him own courthouse complete with jail/ prison inside . In 1865 when Martha Jane Fenton passed away her daughter Mrs John Fenton decided she wanted her mother's old home off Seymour Street & moved it into newer digs next door within Northampton Township called Evergreen Cemetary After Mrs John Fenton’s death circa 1899 another daughterMrs Alice Morse took over but left when she married & had kids so circa 1951 Northampton Township got rid of all 4 daughters (& their parents) through annexation by Arlington Heights Village name change effective 1 January 1952 cuz Arlington Heights wanted more housing development there already!
