The Homewood, Illinois Army Garrison was the first military installation in the city. The garrison was opened on December 8, 1868 by General George Armstrong Custer when he arrived in town to take command of the Union army during the Civil War. The garrison served as a training ground for future officers and soldiers until it was disbanded in 1919. During World War II, Homewood became an important airbases and storage depot for military aircraft. In 1945, the Air Force activatedhomewood as a Major Air Base with 1,000 acres of land. The base remained an active USAF station until it closed in 1991. In recent years, Homewood has become home to several small businesses that provide essential services to its residents. These businesses include a post office, grocery store, library, bank and doctor's office. As part of its revitalization efforts, the City of Homewood is currently working to develop a new downtown area that would include a public works garage and cultural center.

The Homewood Armory and Cadet Battalion was one of the first military units in Illinois. It was founded on December 12, 1848 as the First Regiment of Volunteer Cavalry by General John A. Logan. The battalion served in various conflicts throughout its history, most notably in the Mexican-American War. In 1861, it joined the Union army and fought at Harpers Ferry. The battalion disbanded in 1865, but re-formed two years later as a cavalry regiment under command of Major General Arthur J. Dodge. The regiment participated in many campaigns during the American Civil War, including Battle of Gettysburg. After the war ended, the regiment disbanded again and reformed again under command of Major General George Meade on November 15th, 1871. The regiment served until February 2nd, 1898 when it was dissolved effective due to financial reasons.

Homewood is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1875 by John and Mary (née Henshaw) Henshaw. The first settler in Homewood was James Dixon, who arrived in 1876. In 1880 the town had a population of just two people. By 1888 it had grown to twenty-four residents and by 1912 it had reached thirty-six people. In 1925 the town had a total population of ninety-eight people and by 1930 it had reached one hundred eleven people. In 1945, when World War II ended, Homewood’s population decreased to seventy-two people because many of its citizens were drafted into service during the war. However, by 1950 Homewood's population again increased to ninety-eight residents because many of its citizens participated in the post-war boom period that followed the end of World War II. From 1970 through 2000 HomewOOD experienced steady growth with an average annual increase of 3%. This growth halted abruptly in 2000 due to1999′s recession which caused a decrease in housing values and jobs throughout much of central Illinois as well as across America[1]. However since then there have been several notable achievements for Homewood including: being selected as one of fourteen towns nationwide to receive a grant from President Barack Obama’s BRAVE campaign; becoming home to first responders from both Aurora Township (northwest suburb) and Cook Village (southwest suburban), helping make them familiar with life on their new community; renovation/updating all sixteen schools within the township; increasing access to green space through partnerships with businesses such as Pritzker Park Racquetball Courts & Dog Park; construction/completion of several road projects including Route 53 bypassing downtown; development/establishment of three business incubators which provide start up or expansion opportunities for local businesses
The first white person to live on the present-day site of Homewood was Nicholas Swente in 1814. In 1847, an Illinois Territorial Legislature passed a bill establishing a township called "Homewood" within Cook County. The first settler, John C. Purdy, arrived in 1848 and helped to develop the town. In 1871, the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad reached Homewood and began serving the town. The railroad brought new prosperity to the town and it grew rapidly from its small beginnings. By 1900, Homewood had a population of around 5,000 people. During World War II, much of Homewood was bombed by the United States military as part of Operation Overlord. The bombs destroyed many homes and businesses in the town but also killed several citizens including Mayor Harry Jaffe. After the war,homestead residents started rebuilding their homes and businesses while also trying to start anew in their new community
