The town of Homewood, Illinois is located in the county of Cook, and has a population of 6,594 as of the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Homewood was John Rumph who arrived on February 14th, 1837. The present day town was founded on April 15th, 1876 by Captain James Hinton and his family. It was named after the home that Hinton had built himself in nearby Carbondale. At its peak in the early 1900s, Homewood boasted a population of over 10,000 people. However, during World War II it lost over 60 percent of its residents to military service. Today there are only a few hundred residents remaining at most; most of them are elderly citizens or members of the military. Homewood began as an agricultural community with small amounts of manufacturing taking place until about 1910 when large-scale industry began to grow around Carbondale and Rockford Railroad Station which made transportation available for more people and manufactures goods such as lumber and flour for local markets. This growth didn't last too long though because by 1930 there were only three businesses left in Homewood while Carbondale had become an industrial center with major factories like Armour Ammunition Plant and Ford Motor Company among their neighbors. The post-war years were difficult for the small town as many jobs went away while also prices for goods increased making life difficult for everyday citizens. In 1955 however things began to change when Mayor Harry Allbaugh approved plans to create a shopping mall which would have included restaurants, stores, offices etc.] In 1970 all but one business closed due to competition from larger malls like Sears Yard Mall which had opened up adjacent to them. By 1990 only two businesses remained open within the confines of the original shopping mall having been replaced by strip malls each housing several restaurants including JCPenney & Kmart along with a number of other commericals including Home Depot and Lowe's stores giving homEWOOD its current name - "The Village". Since then various efforts have been made to revive business within the village; some successful such as installing new sidewalks/paving streets fronting onto Main Street while others such as hosting events like ArtWalk which showcased local artists throughout September each year (the latest being held in October 2013) have failed miserably every time due largely to high costs associated with such events plus infrastructure concerns related to increasing traffic levels resulting from recent development outside the boundaries of the village limits
The Homewood neighborhood on the north side of Chicago was developed in the early 1900s. The name comes from homesteaders who came to the area in the early 1800s. The first white settlers in this area were Nicholas and Franceschi families, who arrived around 1847. They started a small farm near what is now Roosevelt Road and Addison Avenue. In 1872, when Andrew Johnson became president, he ordered all freed slaves to be moved out of Jackson Heights on the South Side and into Homewood as part of his efforts to rebuild America after Reconstruction. This order caused much anger and conflict within the black community, which eventually led to violence and property damage throughout the neighborhood. However, by 1901, most of these homes had been replaced with new units or repurposed for other uses in what is now known as North Park Slope. This period marked a time of growth for Homewood – not just because many African Americans had finally been able to purchase their own homes but also because it became an enclave for wealthy white residents seeking privacy from wider neighborhoods on the South Side. During World War II, many Japanese-Americans were forced into relocation camps located in Illinois and Michigan – including Homewood – due to wartime hysteria over Japanese espionage activity. Many people in this district lost their homes during this time period; however, some were able to repurchase them following the war’s end.
