Homer Glen is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Homer Glen was founded by farmers in 1887. The first post office in Homer Glen was established in 1888. The town was named after General William H. Jackson who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Illinois. The first public school in Homer Glen opened on October 3, 1892, when students from schools near town traveled to what was then called Park Forest to join forces with other students from Park Forest High School to open this school as an elementary school for grades K-4th grade scholars living close by on the east side of Cook County and also for children of farmers living west of Cook County on the north side of Cook County (now Kane County). In 1903, the village board voted to name it Homer Township so that people would know where it came from and not just call it Park Forest or Highland because there were already other towns called Park Forest and Highland within those borders at that time! Homer Glen continued growth throughout World War I due to its proximity to military bases like Fort Sheridan and Camp Douglas which generated jobs for many local residents during that time period as well as manufacturing businesses like Goudsmit Rubber Company which built cars door-to-door across America during that time period! During World War II many local residents worked at Soldier's Home Naval Hospital on Addison Street south of downtown Chicago while others worked at Aircraft Maintenance & Repair Plant #2 (AMAR) located on Pulaski Road northwest of downtownChicago which produced rubber pellets used for manufacturing ammunition! Homer Glen was founded in 1881 by Scots-Irish immigrants, and is now an ethnically diverse community with a strong Irish heritage. The town sprang up around a sawmill that had been operating since 1853. The mill closed in 1925 and was replaced by a new one shortly thereafter. In the early days of Homer Glen's growth, its residents were primarily farmers and their families who operated their own businesses. Today, most of the town's residents are employed within the local community or within Dole Foods Company headquarters on North Cicero Avenue. Most importantly for Homer Glen's history and identity, it has been home to many prominent Irish Americans including Premier Denis Healey and his wife Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis; businessman Bobby Orr; military veterans Bob Kapp (USN) and Ted Nolan (USMC); as well as politiciansincluding two Ulysses S Grant presidentsand three first lady’s husbands: James Buchanan III (1862-1925), Alice Paul (1886-1964), and Franklin D Roosevelt (1929-1945). Additionally, many notable athletes have hailing from Homer Glen including basketball player Rick Majerus (born c1978), ice skaters Tony Esposito (born 1967) & Nancy Kerrigan (born 1952), golfer Tiger Woods(1992-)& former football player Phil Simms(1920-. ). One of the earliest organized groups to come to Homer Glen was The Gaelic League which met at least once every month from October 1861 to 1865 when there were only 12 members present! Thereafter meetings were held weekly until 1872 when they disbanded due to lack of membership! However another group called “The United Irishmen” did form in 1882 after becoming frustrated with how things were going in Springfield! They continued meeting until 1886 when they disbanded again because there weren’t enough Catholics living in Springfield! A third group called “The Holy Family” formed in 1893 but this too dissolved soon afterwards because there wasn’t enough alcohol being sold here! Finally, on January 1st 1895 “Masonic Lodge No 2109″ was chartered with 387 members making it one of the largest lodges ever chartered in Cook County!!! Hometown hero Rick Majerus played high school hoops at Highland Park High School where he helped lead his team to state championships back in 1978
