Homer Glen is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Homer Glen is one of the oldest communities in Cook County and has been inhabited since 1836. The name comes from an early settler, John Homer. In 1892, Homer Glen became a city and was annexed by Chicago; however, it reverted to its village form in 1945. The population of the city proper declined to 2,451 at the 2000 census; however, the population of Homer Glen increased to 4,711 as of March 2011. The land that makes up today's Homer Glen was first settled by Methodists in 1840s and 1850s on what is now the eastern edge of present-day Homer Glen. In 1836 John Homer purchased 12 acres (4 hectares) east of his home on Prairie Road from Methodist Reverend James Henson for $225 cash and donated it to the village trustees as a gift «in memory» of his wife Jane who had died just two years earlier from cholera contracted while living with her parents near Decatur Hill Cemetery west of downtown Chicago. On October 8th 1836John homer made an agreement with Rev Henson whereby he would plant corn on his property until February 1st each year so that there would be some evidence left behind that he had done so – this account may be based on real or historical events which took place before this date as no record exists for when or how such an agreement was reached between Mr & Mr Henson ».(Wikipedia) In 1892 City Hall moved from Calumet Avenue to what is now State Street because then-mayor Richard J Condon saw that space could not accommodate all necessary government functions within reach of everyone simultaneously (eG Park District), but City Hall still occupied Calumet Avenue until 1893 due to political correctness issues caused by then Mayor Harry Scott's concern over perceived discrimination against white citizens living near black neighborhoods during white times period(Chicago Tribune). The original plat plan for what would become known as “Homer” included twenty houses: four were built and lived in by Messrs Prentice & Silliman (the later Wigham brothers), six were Beaverbrook House/Alumni Pavilion House(now University Plaza Hotel), four were built for Mrs Davenport (later Ladd), three were build for Atherton(Walsh family) including one house which still stands today (Redstone Tower#1),,one house was used as barracks by US Coloured Troops during World War I (#Eagle Rock House); also included on original plat were ten acres (.8 km²) lot where current day stadium stands located
