At that time, Hoffman Estates was a small village located about 15 miles south of Chicago. It wasn't until after the American Civil War that Hoffman Estates began to grow and become known as a major center for coffee trading and production. The first commercial production of coffee beans in Hoffman Estates took place in 1865 when an Italian cafe called Ninfa set up shop on West Roosevelt Road. From then on, coffee production became more decentralized and localized as different artisanal roasters set up shop throughout the Village. Some of these early pioneers include Donatello's Coffee House (1875-1876), The Dutchman's CoffeeHouse (1901-1902), The Star & Olive Cafe (1920-1921), and Blackhawk Roastery & Cafe (2006-2007). Today, there are over 20 cafes operating within the boundaries of Hoffman Estates with various incarnations including independent roasters such as Project Frankie’s Coffee Shop (2004-2005), Blue Bottle Coffee Company(2008-)/, Green Ronin Coffee Co.(2012-)/, etc.
Hoffman Estates is a suburban city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 66,452 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Hoffman Estates Township and has a total area of 20.5 square miles (51 km²). The name "Hoffman Estates" originated from Leland Hoffmann, an early settler. The first post office in Hoffman Estates was established on October 3, 1887. The township was organized on February 14, 1896. The Chicago and Northwestern Railway built a line through Hoffman Estates in 1909 and it became part of the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1926, General Electric constructed a power plant within the city limits of Hoffman Estates to produce electricity for southern Illinoisans; this plant remains operational today as GE Power Plant 1. In 1955-1956, American Telephone & Telegraph leased land west of Interstate 95 within the city limits of Hoffman Estates to build their new telephone exchange building; this property now houses AT&T Park (formerly Wrigley Field). In 1970, IBM opened its own research center within the city limits of Hoffman Estates called IBM Research North America Headquarters; today that facility is home to IBM Watson Global Innovation Center. In 2001-2002, Intel opened its new data center within town which became known asIntel Lombard Place after Intel's main headquarters located in Lombard Street between LaSalle Street and Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. In 2006-2007 Centennial Olympic Committee erected an observation tower/tower block called "The copper dome" overlooking streets near Sears Tower across from Millennium Park near Soldier Field on the Near West Side of Chicago - one mile east from O'Hare International Airport outside Loop 610 loop - serving as both corporate HQ for COC including all sports events operated by IAAF World Athletics Championships LLC (the host country’s organising body) during their duration as co-host withChicago Organising Committee for London 2012 Olympics together withIstanbul Organising Committee for Istanbul 2014 European Games
