Hoffman Estates is a large, affluent community in the Chicago metropolitan area. It was founded in 1892 by George Hoffman and his brother Julius. The original Hoffmans had 4,000 acres of land and were one of the largest landowners in Illinois. In 1924, George Hoffman donated 1 million acres of land to the city of Chicago for use as a public park. In 1955, Harry Elmer Berger purchased 2,500 acres of Hoffman Estates land from the Hoffmans for $30 million. Berger developed it into what is now known as North Parkland. He also built several high-rise buildings on the property which still stand today. North Parkland became a national center for education and research after being used by such luminaries as Alan Turing and Einstein. In 1984, John Doerr bought 3,500 acres of Hoffman Estates land from Berger for $135 million. Doerr developed it into what is now known as South Parkland. South Parkland became an important cultural center in addition to housing some of Chicagos most famous residents including Jack Kemp and Steven Spielberg.

Hoffman Estates is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Hoffman Estates" was given to the community by John A. Hoffman, who organized and became president of the Armour & Co., a leading manufacturer of firearms and other equipment in Chicago. The original town site was on what is now Hoffman Island in the DuPage River watershed. The first settlers were farmers who arrived around 1847 from Maine and New York City. In 1857, George Washington Cable purchased all of present day Hoffman Estates from John A. Hoffmann for $3,000 cash. The new land consisted of 571 acres (2 km²). In 1870-71, Julius Caesar Kleiman bought 725 acres (291 ha) north of present day Hoffman Estates from Abram Silberman for $2,500 cash; this land ran along both sides of Lake Michigan and included what is today North Side Village and South Side Village
