The Hoffman Estates Army post office was established in 1881 as the first military post office in Illinois. The post office was located on Elm Street in Hoffman Estates and served the city of Hoffman Estates, a suburb of Chicago. The army closed its headquarters at Elm Street in 1944, but continued to use the building until it was destroyed by fire in 1958. In 1962, the army moved its Military Assistance Command Headquarters from Fort Sill, Oklahoma to Hoffman Estates. That same year, the department of defense created an area within Area B for offices of military assistance commands, which included the army's Military Assistance Command Headquarters. In 1968, Area B became known as Southern Illinois Regional Commands and became responsible for all military assistance commands within that region. The army reopened its headquarters at Elm Street in 1994 after being closed since 1942. In 2006, Area B became known as Northwestern Illinois Regional Commands and continues to be responsible for all military assistance commands within that region. currently there are 5 regional commanders with responsibility for all 10 counties in Northwestern Illinois

It was located on the edge of the then-new city of Chicago, and its boundaries were not well defined until 1872 when a land grant called "Hoffman's Purchase" was made by General John Brown to Elias Bickerton and others. Hoffmans Purchase extended from what is now the north side of Clark Street in Evanston to State Street in South Side Village; it included all or parts of six villages: Argyle, Beaconsfield, Brighton Park, Brookline Village, Damen Heights andWPavilion". Hoffmans Purchase also included land east of Michigan Avenue that would become Lincoln Park. In 1871 Charles Wiltgardt bought 160 acres (66 ha) northeast of present-day Hoffman Estates from George M. Hoffman; he renamed it Elmhurst after his family home in Elmira, New York where they had settled earlier that year while living with their parents on horseback during their honeymoon trip across America). In 1893 Elisha Gray purchased an additional 80 acres (32 ha) northwest of present-day Hoffman Estates from Wiltgardt for $1 million (). Gray donated this land to the community as part of its first donation drive which raised $20 million (). The first permanent residents arrived in Hoffmans Purchase in 1873 when Isaac Salk opened a powder shop near present day Kedzie Boulevard and Western Avenue. In 1899 Pritzker Prize–winning architect Daniel Burnham designed one half mile (0.8 km) long public street running through downtown Hoffman Estates called Michigan Avenue () after President Abraham Lincoln (). This street provides easy access to today's shopping districts such as Rockridge Shopping Center (), Dixon Plaza () and Northwestern Mutual Building (). After World War I many citizens left Hoffmans Purchase for better opportunities elsewhere due to wartime economic hardship; however few returned until the late 1930s when prices for farmlands plummeted making it difficult to maintain poverty-level incomes without jobs outside farming(). Many people who did return found themselves trapped within small towns like Highland Park which had grownups unable or unwilling ever leave again due largely to zoning restrictions placed on them by their former municipalities (). However by 1990 most residents had moved away either permanently or altogether leaving behind an infrastructure consisting only of cemeteries (), schools () and churches ().
