In 1847, John S. Hoffmann and his brother James purchased a farm in what is now Hoffman Estates from the Mann family. The Hoffmans were farmers with a rustic lifestyle that blended German, Swiss, Dutch and English culture into one. They grew corn, wheat, oats, potatoes, garlic and onions on their property until 1892 when they sold it to George Pullman for $30,000. Hoffman Estates was founded in 1892 as a horse-drawn carriage town east of Chicago. It rapidly became an important bedroom community for Chicagoans of all classes because of its train station, 10 miles away from the city center.
