Hinsdale, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,815 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the sixth-largest city in Chicago metropolitan area. Hinsdale is also one of the fastest-growing cities in Illinois. The land that now comprises Hinsdale was first settled by Native Americans in this area as early as 1795. The first residents were farmers who cultivated corn, beans, and squash on small parcels of land they acquired from the Indian tribes. By 1830, settlers had built up a town on about 120 acres (4 hectares). In 1834–35, George Stephenson erected a toll road through the forest between his plantation near Mount Prospect and Hinsdale to bring traffic to and from Lake Michigan. Because of this road's importance for transportation and trade within Cook County and across Lake Michigan, Hinsdale quickly became an important center for business development. In 1856–57 when Chicago began its rapid growth as a commercial center due to railroad construction nearby, Hinsdale experienced its own boom period with several large businesses opening their doors including Pabst Brewing Company (then called Wacker bourbon), Jardine & Mathews Wharf (a shipping company), Sears Roebuck & Co., A&P grocery stores (#1 store west of downtown Chicago), First National Bank #2 (now part of JPMorgan Chase) and John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance company headquarters building located at 217 East Washington Street (). In 1865–66 American Civil War veteran General William Tecumseh Sherman marched through Cook County en route to arm Confederate soldiers along the Great Lakes region during his epic march known as "the March on Chicago". One possible explanation for why Sherman passed through Blackhawks' town instead of more central locations such as Peoria or Springfield is that Blackhawks was an isolated community with good access to water supplies necessary for cooking food over open fires during winter months. With so few other residents living close by it likely took little persuading for Tecumseh Sherman to stop at Blackhawks' home turf where he could have easily meet local officials there for military purposes should hostilities continue throughout his march southward into southern Illinois
