The National Guard has been in Hinsdale, Illinois since 1903. The first national guard unit was organized on December 5th, 1903 with the organization of the First Armored Infantry Regiment. In 1911, the Second Armored Infantry Regiment was activated and became part of the National Guard. The First Battalion (Hinsdale) of the First Armored Infantry Regiment served in World War I and were awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for their heroism. In 1933, the Third Battalion (Hinsdale) of the First Armored Infantry Regiment was activated and became part of the Illinois National Guard. The regiment participated in World War II as a participant in Operation Neptune’s Spear and also received many citations for their actions including three Presidential Unit Citations. In 1951, when interstate highways were built through central Illinois, Governor Adlai Stevenson called for additional state troops to be mobilized to help with traffic control during construction projects. On November 15th, 1951, units from all thirteen states contributed toOperation Greaseball which included training exercises at Soldier Field in Chicago. This event marked an important milestone in state-national guard cooperation and is still celebrated every year by joint military/civilian events across Illinois.

Hinsdale, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Hinsdale" was given to the community by General John Henshaw in 1847 and means "hills near Moline". The first post office opened in 1851. A township was organized in 1857, and a city on July 1, 1898. The City of Hinsdale petitioned for annexation with Chicago on March 16, 1907 and received approval on April 6th. The merger created a new city government which had four wards: east (Edgewater), west (Irving Park), south (South Side) and north (North Side). On November 3rd 1920 the City of Hinsdale merged with the village of Arlington Heights to form what is now known as the Chicago Metropolitan Area

Polk established a National Guard Bureau to manage the National Guard and create a system for calling up troops for military service. The bureau also developed regulations on how members of the National Guard could be retained and used in the event of a state of emergency or insurrection. After World War II, there was an increase in national guard deployments due to tensions with other countries and increased civil unrest. After the Watts Riots in Los Angeles in 1965, President John F Kennedy ordered all states to maintain at least 1,000 military personnel within their borders as part of his response to social unrest. This ordering led to large numbers of soldiers being called up from state militias throughout America. In 1970, President Richard Nixon created the Department of Defense Reserve Command which gave individuals selected from state militias duty status with pay instead of simply being officers assigned to units permanently (this change solidified militia status). During the 1990s and 2000s there was an increasing trend towards civilianization of national guard units; this happened due to budget limitations as well as changes in law that made it easier for civilians to join armies without getting drafted into combat theaters or experiencing combat exposure. As more people became interested in joining militias they began looking for gift ideas that would reflect their interests and values. One popular idea is giving soldiers t-shirts or bumper stickers with patriotic slogans such as "We Serve Our Country" or "No More Vietnams".
