Hinsdale, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is the county seat of Cook County. Hinsdale is home to Northwestern University and DePaul University. The village of Hinsdale first appeared on maps as early as 1836. The name "Hinsdale" was given to it by General David Dixon during his retreat from Fort Dearborn in 1837 after being defeated there by American forces under Rosser. Dixon called the village so because he had seen hinckley trees (a type of oak) near his farmhouse. In 1881, two women named Anna Neely and Sophronia Lewis founded what would become Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. In 1912 Hinsdale's first post office opened with mail service arriving every day except Sunday. In 1916 the Village Board voted to annex part of neighboring Arlington Heights which at that time had a population of over 20,000 people but did not follow through with annexation until 1970 when they voted to add an additional district to their boundaries making Hinsdale one municipality with a total population exceeding 25,000 residents Northwest High School (now known as DePaul High School) was built in 1927 in response to a demand for more education opportunities for local children living around Route 66 then located within Cook County limits only; however this development didn't happen until after high school students had crossed over into Lake County courtesy of US Highway 66 . In 2000-2001 construction started on what would become downtown Hinsdale which coincided with plans for Northwestern University's expansion westward into former Aurora Township which bordered on northwest suburbanChicago and became Aurora North High School when Northwestern moved its main campus there from Des Plaines Avenue south about 2 miles east of downtown Chicago . This relocation also increased Allen Park’s population by 10 percent due to many students who were displaced from downtown Aurora during that same period . Finally on October 1st 2001 municipal officials approved applications for street names beginning with “Driscoll” – naming honors Driscoll township trustee who pushed hard for City Council approval in order that new north-south streets running parallel Fourth Street east/west along South Shore Drive be renamed after him instead of just street numbers like prior years; accordingly these renamed streets now form part of northwestern’s newest district - “Driscoll” District 3 With 17th Street having been renamed “Adams Boulevard” following its alignment across South Side Drive from Driscoll Boulevard past McCormick Place mall towards O'hare airport it can now finally be reported that FORT DRISCOLL has officially been dedicated...!

The growth of the town led to increased development around it including downtown, which had a school, post office, and businesses by 1850. By 1870 the population had reached 300 people and Hinsdale began to become an important commercial center in central Illinois. In 1893 Hinsdale was named one of five communities in Cook County that became part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area.
