The USS Lexington was a cruiser that served in the Pacific Theater and was sent to Hawaii to pick up supplies for the war effort. While in Hawaii, she picked up a gift from Japan - an American destroyer, the USS Ishtar. The Ishtar was a new ship and it had been commissioned just before the war started. The captain of her unit, Rear Admiral Harry Wohlstetter, happened to be on board the Lexington when she got the gift. Wohlstetter took great offense at being given a Destroyer instead of an Aircraft Carrier as his unit's gift. He made arrangements to have both ships delivered back to America on different occasions so that he could show them off to his friends and family. Highland Park, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 34,521 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the north side of Chicago and bordered by the municipalities of Oak Lawn to the east, Englewood to the south and Westchester to the west. The first settler in what would become Highland Park was John Thornton who arrived in 1847. He erected a cabin on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan and named it Thorntonville after himself. By 1850 there were about 30 people living in or near Highland Park. In 1853 a post office was established at Highland Park with James Wigglesworth as its first superintendent. The town was incorporated on April 14, 1856 under the name of "Haley Heights". In 1870 Alfred Horsford purchased land northeast of present-day Highland Park from Drury & Company for $3,000; this site became known as Horsfordowne Cove because it overlooked water that drained into Fort Dearborn Harbor on Lake Michigan. On November 6, 1870, Horsford founded what would become Chicago's second city limits when he donated 3 acres (1 km²) of land to be within their current boundaries - this land later became River Northgate Shopping Center between Wacker Drive and Sheffield Avenue today occupied by Northwestern Mutual headquarters building (originally Sears Tower). In 1876 Edwin Cranch purchased 640 acres (248 ha) northwest of present-day Highland Park from Horsford for $4 million; this site became known as Copley Woods because it lay along both Foxden Road and Cicero Avenue which connected Chicago with suburban areas to the north and east while running between lakefront properties owned by prominent citizens including Jethro Gibbs Drexel & Company founders George Peabody Jr.,James Stillman Shaw Sr.,and Solomon Cohen Deedsman across Foxden Road/Cicero Ave./Jackson Boulevard today known as Devon Energy offices buildings (originally Oil company tower), Howard Johnson's restaurant(now Hard Rock Cafe), Sears Tower now occupied by Pritzker Pavilion marking one corner of campus

In 1969, Commodore Elmo Bowers donated his gold coins collection to NAS Hampton Roads VA for use in museum exhibits and research. Highland Park is a small town in central Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Highland Park was laid out in 1871 by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, two of the architects who designed New York City's Central Park. It is named after the Scottish Highlands, where much of its early development took place. Highland Park is located on the banks of the Cook River, north of Chicago. The town was founded on November 6, 1871, when a group of pioneers from Scotland set out from London to explore what would become Illinois. They arrived at what is now Highland Park just over a year later on October 8th, 1872. The name "Highland Park" was given to them by General George Washington Carver who had met them while they were exploring Indiana Territory. Carver thought that this area would be an ideal spot for farming due to its rich soil and high mountains nearby. The first residents of Highland Park were some men from Glasgow who came overRG guns and started building homes in October 1872- December 1872. Among these first settlers were Alexander Mackenzie (1822-1910), John Findlay (1827-1912), James Grieve (1828-1920), William Macdonald (1846-1928) and Archibald Murdoch (1785-1860). The first school in Highland Park was built in January 1873 by Mrs Claiborne Fenton with 10 students attending each day during the winter months only because there wasn't enough space for everyone else on campus! In addition to schools there were also barns and outbuildings used for agricultural purposes until 1945 when all those buildings were demolished and replaced with modern housing developments! After years of being almost completely deserted it finally happened when someone decided to build a house back in 1955! This house became known as "The House That Rattled Its Cage" or simply "The House". It has been said that if it wasn't for this one house things might have continued getting worse instead they got better because without that one decision everything else around HighlandPark would have slowly died away as well! One interesting fact about HighlandPark is that it has had more mayors than any other community in Illinois! There have been 22 different mayors total which includes 3 terms as mayor plus 2 terms as acting mayor! Most notable mayors are: Harry S Truman (1945-1953), Richard M Daley (1963-1968), Jerry Brown (2013-)
The first European settlers in Highland Park, Illinois were French colonists who arrived in 1763. The original land was part of the larger Illinois Country and was given to the French by the British. The area now comprising Highland Park was originally part of Bloomington Township, but it became a separate township on March 1, 1837. On October 15, 1871, Highland Park became a village under the jurisdiction of Bloomington. On November 3, 1912, Highland Park annexed the neighboring town of South Holland and became an official city.
