Highland Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,086 at the 2010 census. Highland Park was officially incorporated on December 12, 1871. The name of the town comes from the highlands that make up its boundaries. The first inhabitants of what is now Highland Park were Scottish immigrants who settled in what is now the eastern part of town in 1809. By 1840, English and Irish settlers had also arrived in what is now Highland Park. In 1851, a group of Scotsmen decided to start a new town just west of Highland Park so they could be closer to their kinfolk and continue trading with them. The townsite was named Scotchtown after its founders. One important development at this time was the construction of the Illinois Central Railroad which passed through Highland Park in 1867. This railroad added much-neededemployment and commerce to the area and helped make Highland Park one of the most popular villages in Cook County by 1900. During World War II, many residents worked on military bases throughout Cook County including those located in Aurora and Naperville. After the war ended, many people left Highland Park for other parts of Illinois or for California where jobs were plentiful during that period of economic growth.
