Navy Deployed Gift History in Hickory Hills, Illinois began with the help of USS Constitution Museum. On September 14, 1903, the USS Constitution Museum donated a bronze plaque to the town of Hickory Hills in honor of Rear Admiral David G. Farragut and his crew who served aboard the Constitution during its tour of duty at battleship storied Decatur and flagship Illinois. This gift was followed by an even larger donation from Commodore John D. Stockton on December 15, 1903 when he presented a bronze plaque to the Navy Yard at McCormick Place in Chicago in memory of those who lost their lives while serving aboard Constitution during her shakedown cruise off Long Island. The USS Constitution Museum continues to contribute items such as plaques and mugshots for display at Naval Base San Diego and Naval Air Station Miramar today. The Navy Deployed Gift Program (NDGP) is a program that allows the military to give gifts to service members and their families stationed abroad. The NDGP was first established in 1992 as a way for the military to show its support for our troops. Today, the NDGP provides unique opportunities for the military to reach out and touch base with service members and their families. Through the NDGP, the military can provide soldiers and Sailors with unique gifts that will make them feel loved and appreciated. Some of the different types of gifts that can be given through the NDGP include: travel tickets, money orders, season tickets, or home goods. Gifts that are chosen for their specific meaning to a soldier or sailor may differ from one individual to another, but all of these gifts offer an opportunity for interaction between Service Members and their family back at home. In recent years, there have been many changes made to the NDGP program. One change that has been most popularized is called “The Decorator’s Assistant” campaign. This campaign allows servicemembers and their families living overseas to create custom-made gift items for their friends and family back at home. These items can range from simple magnets to expensive furniture pieces. The Decorator’s Assistant campaign has become quite popular because it offers servicemembers an opportunity not only to give something special away, but also get involved in something larger than themselves. Hickory Hills is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1855 by Scots-Irish immigrants as Hickory Grove Township. In 1872, it merged with neighboring Arlington Heights to form Hickory Hills Village. The name change came about because of confusion over whether Hickory Grove or Arlington Heights were in Illinois or Kentucky. On September 20, 1912, Hickory Hills Village became a city after being passed by the Illinois General Assembly as a merger of two adjacent townships into one municipality under the name of Chicago's "inner city". Hickory Hills has been known for its forestry and meatpacking industries since before World War II when local farmers produced hogs and other animals for slaughter in nearby Armour Meat Packers and Packing Company plants on Harlem Road and Addison Avenue. Today, much of the economy comes from services such as education and health care that are provided by Area Health Services Corporation (AHS). There are also a few small businesses that provide goods and services to residents including restaurants, shops, mechanics, dentists/dentist offices etc., although many have closed down since 2009 due to economic conditions within the community. Hickory Hills is a small town in the U.S. state of Illinois, located on the west bank of the Kankakee River. Hickory Hills was founded in 1836 by Scots-Irish settlers who named it after hickory trees that were found near their farmstead. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Hickory Hills were travelers on the Illinois and Michigan Railroad who stopped there in 1836 while travelling from Chicago to St. Louis. They built a cabin near what is now Hickory Hills and cooked their meals over an open fire which they called "the griddle." A few years later, John Pritzker bought land around what is now Hickory Hills and started to build a house. He named his home "Hickory Hill" after one of his trees which he had seen growing near his farmstead. By 1850, many other people had moved to Hickory Hills including farmers, mechanics, bankers, mechanics' wives and children of soldiers during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1881, James Hickey opened up Hickey's grocery store on Main Street which became one of the most important businesses in Hickory Hills. After World War II, many prominent citizens went into retirement or died leaving behind memories of them in HickORY HILL
Hickory Hills was founded in 1847, by John Hickory and his wife Cate. The town is located in McLean County, Illinois, about 25 miles east of Chicago. It became a village in 1905 and an incorporated city in 1912.
