Hickory Hills is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Hickory Hills is located 12 miles (19 km) northeast of downtown Chicago and is bordered by the towns of Lawndale to the east and Westchester to the north. The name "Hickory" comes from a tree that grows in this community, and also refers to how clear and dry Hickory Hills climate is typical of much of central Illinois. As early as 1847, settlers in what would become Hickory Hills remembered Indian trails leading there from other parts of northwest Illinois that had been burned by war or freezing weather. In 1857, James Jourdain started clearing land for a new farm on what would become Hickory Hill Road. That same year saw the first shipment of hogs destined for Chicago market set down on his farm by wagonloads (now known as Hennepin Avenue). The first store opened in Hickory Hills in 1865; it was called Jourdain's Store & Mercantile Agency. By 1868, some 400 people lived in Hickory Hills and two churches were functioning: First Baptist Church (later renamed Christ Episcopal) and Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. The post office operated at 1005 N Federal Road from 1868-1880 before moving to its current location on State Street in 1880 after being destroyed by fire just two years earlier; it reopened with mail service later that year. In 1902, a group of friends founded what would be known as Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU Carbondale), which soon became one of the Midwest's most prestigious universities. SIU Carbondale grew rapidly due to its strong relationship with Carbondale Business College – now Northern Illinois University Aurora – which helped establish SIU Carbondale as one of America's largest business schools during the 1920s and 1930s In 1947–48 an important milestone occurred when SIU students established their own football team which quickly rose up through Division I ranks before eventually joining Intercollegiate Athletics Association (IAA) member Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team during coach Knute Rockne's legendary "meschine" era at Notre Dame starting with Varsity Games against Michigan Wolverines! The name "Hickory Hills" comes from the Hickory tree, which is a common source of wood for furniture and building materials in northern Illinois. In 1847, the first post office in Hickory Hills was established. The first store opened on Main Street in 1848. Hickory Hills was originally named Greencastle but changed to its current name after an early settler named Daniel Boone Hodges acquired land around Hickory Hill Cemetery in 1853. In 1870, a railroad line reached Hickory Hills from Rockford and it became an important stop on the route between Chicago and Springfield. The railroad closed in 1948 but portions of the line still run through Hickory Hills today including tracks that connect with I-355 near downtown Chicago. On November 15, 1903, Mayor John J. Ryan announced that he had decided to annex Hickory Hills intoChicago as part of his plan to create more compact cities within city limits while still keeping open space as a parkland reserve within City Hall boundaries
