Hickory Hills is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,895 as of the 2010 census. Hickory Hills is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name comes from "hickory" an American tree and "hill" a rise or prominence. The first settler in Hickory Hills was J.M. Beavers who arrived in 1837 and built a log cabin on the hill that now bears his name. Beavers descendants still live in Hickory Hills and are active in community affairs. In 1850, Wm. Hickey settled here with his family and began to cultivate hickories for lumber. By 1860, hickories were being grown commercially all over Illinois and Indiana; Hickory Hills was one of just 12 villages where this happened! In 1870, after years of hard work by many people including Thomas Paine (a local resident), Captain John Boggs organized the first grain elevator at what is now known as Scott’s Mill Road & Highway 40 (now Old State Route 6). This important development led to increased trade through central Illinois which helped create more jobs for those living hereabouts! In 1880, when Jane Addams founded HullHouse Village – one of the most famous resettlement projects ever initiated – Hickory Hills had already become an important center for social welfare activities due to its close proximity toCHAAPLES City Limits on Lake Street/State Route 6A (the modern day Van Dyke Expressway). In 1902-1903 Mrs Addams supervised construction of her home at 701 North State Route 6A which served as headquarters for HullHouse until it moved to Evanston two years later! A number of other notable residents have also lived here including civil rights activist Dorothy Height; football coach Army Coach Amos Alonzo Stagg; author James Baldwin; singer Joe Bonamassa and many others! Today Hickory Hills remains a vibrant community with active businesses and organizations that continue making contributions to their local community
