Hickory Hills is part of the Wheaton–Kenilworth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Hickory Hills was made by Captain John Butler and his men landing on the site in 1795. The name "Hickory" was given to the trees that lined the banks of the Fox River which ran through this area. The first post office was called "Calumet" and opened in 1836. In 1868, a railroad station (later renamed "Hickory") was built here and served as a busy transportation hub for farmers from throughout DuPage County and beyond. In 1924, Hickory Hills became a city when it merged with neighboring Elmhurst Township. Today, Hickory Hills remains an agricultural village with many homes surrounded by acres of cornfields, cottonwoods, oak forests, maple woods and other natural resources. There are several shopping malls within close proximity including Navy Pier/Lake Michigan Landing and Center Crossroads Shopping Centre which are both open 24/7/. Residents enjoy access to excellent public schools including Elmhurst-University Park High School (a top performing school), Wheaton-Kenilworth Community Schools (the best school district in Illinois), Stritch University School of Nursing & Health Sciences - one of only two osteopathic medical schools operating in Illinois - as well as dozens of cultural attractions such as Theater District Blues nightspot or Museum District's Art Institute/Museum Of Science & Industry which has collections totaling over 350 items from across history!

Hickory Hills was founded in 1836 by John D. Rockefeller and his father-in-law, James Buchanan Dudley. The town site was chosen for its Decker Creek water supply and its natural cache of hickory trees. Hickory Hills grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to its location on the banks of the Des Plaines River near what is now West Side Highway (I-290). The town quickly became known for its hickories, which were used in furniture, tools, toys and other products. In 1868, Hickory Hills became one of the first towns in Cook County to be incorporated as a village. In 1899, Hickory Hills merged with neighboring Arlington Heights to form what is now Chicago's most populous township/ward/census area; however many residents continue to identify as Hicksville residents even though their township boundaries diverged slightly from those of Arlington Heights after that merger occurred. The economy of Hickory Hill has been based largely on agriculture since it inception until recent years when light manufacturing has become more prevalent within the community including apparel companies such as Nike and Adidas
