In 1934, the United States Air Force activated its first squadron of Boeing P-38 Lightning fighter planes. The gift of these aircraft was a significant moment in air history as they were the first jet-powered fighters to be utilized by the USAF. In 1959, the USAF activated its third squadron of Boeing P-61 Black Widow jets and again gifted these powerful machines to Hickory Hills AFB. In 1992, the USAFactivated its fifth squadron of Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS jets which gave Hickory Hills AFB an amazing system to monitor and prevent enemy airspace from being violated.
Hickory Hills is a small town in the southern half of Illinois. The population was 5,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town began as a farming community and has since become an agricultural center for southern Illinois with many large farms and warehouses. Hickory Hills is also home to several factories, including Caterpillar and Jabil-Lee Manufacturing. The current mayor of Hickory Hills is Jeff Smith. Hickory Hills was founded in 1849 by Jedediah Smith, who named it after the hickory tree that he found near his farmhouse. At first, most people in Hickory Hills engaged in agriculture or worked on nearby farms. However, over time, there developed an industrial base led by Jabil-Lee Manufacturing Company which manufactured agricultural implements such as tractors and corn shears. This industry gave Hickory Hills a reputation as one ofthe most important towns in southern Illinois due to its access to markets and its proximity to larger cities like Chicago. Today, Hickory Hills continues to be a vibrant community with many businesses and residents that are committed to their local economy and quality of life
The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History is a history of the air force's gifts to civilians and military personnel. The program began in 1948 with the establishment of the USAF Gift Division. From then until 1978, when it was discontinued, the USAF presented civilian and military members with items ranging from weapons to radios and other equipment. Many of these gifts were purchased through donations or sales by Military Aircraft Parts Corporation (MAPC). MAPC was founded in 1935 by Major General Harry S. Truman as a private business that bought surplus aircraft parts from manufacturers. In 1951, MAPC became part of the USAF and donated its entire inventory to the Smithsonian Institution for display in their Museum of Flight. Today, MAPC's collection includes more than 2,500 pieces from over 50 different countries. In 1978, when the USAF Gift Division was disbanded, its functions were transferred to the Pentagon's Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), which continues to administer the program today. The DLA also maintains a digital archive of all gift histories from 1948-present.

Hickory Hills is a census-designated place in Chatham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Hickory Hills was founded by pioneers in 1849 as a small settlement on the banks of the Little Ottawa River. The name "Hickory" originated from hickory nuts, which were abundant in the area at that time. The first post office at Hickory Hills was established in 1850 and opened under the name of "Oak Grove." In 1856, a school was built there and it continued to serve as an educational center until it closed in 1951. In 1902, local farmers started planting corn and wheat on what is now the site of Hickory Hills Elementary School. The two farms became one and were renamed "Hickory Hill Farms". The corn farm continues to operate today as Cornland Farms LLC. At its peak during World War II, Hickory Hills had over 20 businesses including five grocery stores and three homesharing companies operating out of four buildings on main Street between Elmwood Avenue and Deerfield Road. Today only one business remains: Home Hardware Plus located off Interstate 55 east of town near I-290 Exit 282A (Highway 72). Hickiary Hills also boasted a large manufacturing sector with many small businesses being founded such as Jiffy Lube (now Lowe's) and American Weighing Machine Company (AWM). However most factories closed down or moved away during this period due to competition from bigger cities like Chicago or Detroit. After years of decline throughout most of the 2000s, Hickory Hills experienced resurgence starting around 2007 when new residents began moving into the community for various reasons such as job opportunities or retirements among other things; however it has since slowed again mainly because demand for housing has outstripped available units overall in Chatham County according to recent data from county planners. Around 2016 there were reports that some developers may try to develop land north of town between I-555/I-290 Parkway exit 283B & Elk Grove Village Rd., but no decisions have been made yet about what will be built there yet
