Navy gift history in Herrin, Illinois began with the United States Navy. In 1893, Commander John P O’Brien started a gift shop on the wharf at Pier 3 in Herrin. His store offered a variety of gifts for sailors and their families, including books, tools, clothing, and other items needed for service. Over time, other sailors’ groups helped start gift stores throughout the country. The first military store in Herrin was founded by Captain J F Blanchard in 1916. In World War II, the USS Missouri donated 10 armored cars to be used as supplies by the USNV (United States Naval Volunteer Reserve). These vehicles were used to transport food and ammunition to naval gunboats and aircraft carriers around the world. The ship also provided tours for troops during war time. In 1949, Commander W H White opened his Store #1 on Wharf Rd., just north of downtown Herrin. This store became one of the most popular in town due to its wide selection of gifts for people who served or lived nearthe navy or military. Commander White continued this tradition by opening his store every day from 7am until 5pm from 1951-1976 inclusive! In 1978 Commander White passed away and his daughter Kathy took over operations of the store until her husband Rick's death in 1988 which left Kathy alone with her business again! In 1990 dockworkers went on strike against their employer ILWU Local 819 which caused significant damage to both stores but Kathy managed to reopen both stores within days! After sixteen years as owner/operator of these two stores Kathy sold them both to Midwestern Life Insurance Company in 2001! That same year Midwestern Life Insurance Company merged with AIG Corporation creating what is now called Nautilus Incorporated! nsync has been running since 2001!! The shipbuilding and mercantile community of Herrin developed as a result of the construction of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad. In 1887, Captain John J. Kapp assigned his son John to take over management of the company’s plant in Herrin. With Kapp’s guidance, Herrin became one of the leading shipyards in the Midwest. By 1907, Captain Edwin C. Ladd had acquired a controlling interest in the company and continued to lead it until his death in 1922. DuringCaptain Ladd’s ownership there was significant growth within the business; he tripled the size ofthe plant and built new ships for both merchant shipping and naval auxiliary service In 1916, Rear Admiral William Pecksniff purchased majority control ofHerrin from Captain John Kapp's widow Ethel Kapp Nevin with financial assistance from millionaire industrialist Andrew Carnegie Pecksniff renamed her USS Constitution ( XX-XX-1916) USS Constitution served as flagship for America's First World War navy during 1917-1920 USS Constitution was decommissioned on 2/4/1921 after serving throughout World War One
Herrin is a small town in the Will County, Illinois area. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern part of the county. Herrin has a public school system and a library. The community started as a post office on October 3, 1892. A store was built there in 1893 and named "The Herrin Store". The first resident to be listed on the town plat was Mrs. C.A. Mason on November 2, 1903. There were only 10 residents when it was platted and by 1907 there were only 8 residents living there permanently due to World War I and other factors that forced people out of their homes during those years. In 1915, Mr./Mrs./ Miss Alice Latham moved into the town from Greencastle with her two sons (Leston Jr., Vernon). She had been born in Herrin but raised near Greencastle until she moved away when she married Vernon Latham Sr.. They operated a grocery store until they sold it to George Jourdan in 1922 which made him the first black owner of an all-white community in Will County history As time passed more businesses closed down due to lack of customers or competition from other towns withinWill County or outside of it; however, one business that continued to operate for many years was The Grist Mill which used to produce flour for local restaurants and also exported some products such as cornmeal and baking powder . After being bought by Alfred Purdy in 1967; he changed its name back to The Grist Mill Company after shutting down his own mill several times because he could not find anyone who would buy his flour stock From 1923 until 1969, local photographer/writer/artist Harry Payne Whitney lived here with his wife Winifred Bicknell Whitney while they produced stamps for United States Post Office which still exists today In 1984/1985 three families: Derryn Henson’s family (4 children), Roy Rogers’ family (2 children), parents & kids camped out at night taking pictures around City Hall Square while city officials did not have any trailers available so they set up shop inside one of city hall bathrooms

Herrin is a tiny community in the township of Potter in Herrin Township, Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3 as of the 2010 census. The first settler to arrive in what would become Herrin was Abram Henson on April 6, 1836. He and his family were pioneers and started a small farm which they operated until 1845. In 1847, John Bickerton arrived from Greencastle, Indiana with his wife Sarah and their two children. They built a cabin on the side of the mountain which still stands today. In 1870, Philips Truex came to Herrin from Farmington, Iowa with his family. He bought 640 acres (240 hectares) of land east of town for $10 per acre. Truex built a log house on the property and named it Herrin after his birthplace in Germany: Hamburg. Truex also donated four horses and twenty acres (10 hectares) of land to be used as an agricultural center for farmers in Herrin Township and Cook County
