Navy deployed gift history in Herrin, Illinois dates back to the early 1800s. The Navy's first deployment was to the Mediterranean in 1804. From then until World War II, the navy stationed marines and sailors in Illinois to provide support for naval operations. The USS Constitution (1797-1864) was one of the navy's first warships. She served as a flagship during the War of 1812 and played an important role in Naval engagements at Santiago de Cuba, Pensacola, Mobile Bay and Havana. In 1865, while she was still afloat, Constitution was used as a floating arsenal to store munitions for use in the Civil War. In 1893-94, USS Constitution sailed from her homeport of Mare Island under orders from President Grover Cleveland to participate in the Spanish American War. Aboard her were Commodore John Wainwright and Rear Admiral Amos Kendall with troops commanded by Brigadier General James Kossuth. On 15 November 1893 Superior Court Judge Augustus Lansing delivered his decision authorising Ulysses S Grant's purchase of two guns from Manuel Gomez y Flores at an auction held at Hennepin County courthouse on 5 December 1893 conducted by arbitrator Hiram Elmer Janssen under authority given by court order No 10 dated 17 October 1890 involving José Antonio Aguirre y Nunez et al.. This event is sometimes referred to as `the sale of two guns' or simply as `gift history'. It marked an important milestone in Navy gift history because it demonstrated that gifts could be exchanged between members of different branches of service without breaking military regulations which limited such transactions to family members only or those connected through marriage or adoption only. The following year on 2 February 1894 Commodore John Wainwright presented Rear Admiral Amos Kendall with a gift certificate for fifteen pounds sterling worth of cigars which had been ordered by Secretary Haywood Senate Office Building upon learning that Kendall had recently returned Stateside after being absent aboard USS Constitution during its voyage across the Atlantic Ocean when that ship fought against Portuguese forces off Cape Bojador). This act demonstrates how formalized Navy gift history became over time. Herrin is a small community in the south central area of Illinois, United States. It has a population of less than 1,000 people and is located approximately 25 miles (40 km) east of Chicago. The Herrin School District serves the community. The town was founded in 1892 by two men, Hiram Herrin and George Smith. The first post office was established in 1893. The first store opened in 1896. Herrin was named for Hiram Herrin, an early settler who helped purchase the land that became Herrin Township. George Smith donated $5 to the town site from his farm near present-day Jacksonville, Illinois on November 5, 1892. In 1903, John Witherspoon donated $10 to the town site from his farm near Carbondale after his death. Herrin Township was organized on November 3, 1912 under the name of "Herrington Township". It changed its name to "Herrin Township" on July 1, 1916 due to merging with other townships located in Cook County including Carbondale and Streamwood

Herrin, Illinois was one of the original towns in Jackson County, Illinois. The town was organized on February 14, 1836 by a group of men led by John Herrin. The first Post Office at Herrin was established on May 12, 1836. Herrin became a Village on October 15, 1859. On January 1, 1870, the village became a Township and on January 1, 1893 it became an incorporated municipality. On November 3rd of that year the township changed its name to Herrin City and is now part of the city of Rockford. The town is located in central Jackson County about 25 miles west of downtown Chicago and 125 miles southwest of Springfield. It has a population today estimated at over 5,000 people and covers an area of about 36 square miles (113 square kilometers). The surface water sources for the town are two creeks: the Chicagoland River near Community Park and Prairie Creek east of Uptown Shopping Center. John Herrin founded Herrin after coming to Illinois from Pennsylvania in 1837 with his family as part of the Great Migration to escape poverty and religious persecution in his home country. In 1838 he built a log cabin near what is now Community Park where he operated a small store until 1840 when he moved his business to what is now Uptown Shopping Center which was then called “The Egyptian” hotel because it had been owned by one Mina Effingham who also ran an opera house across the street from her brick building at Seventh Avenue and South Dearborn Street NW (now Michigan Avenue). In 1841 John married Sarah Jane Hanks who had come to America with her parents from England about two years earlier; they were married at Trinity Church in Quincy (now part of Chicago) on December 10th under circumstances that are still mysterious even though Sarah Jane later developed some theories about why their marriage did not work out and she left America for good shortly thereafter; she never returned to live in Illinois again although she continued to visit periodically until her death in 1895 from pneumonia at age 83 years old while living in New York City; John died three months later but there is no record that Sarah Jane ever received any money or recognition for her husband’s death which remains unknown even though she may have been directly responsible for driving him out West so that he could find success as a farmer- rancher etc…. To this day many people believe Sarah Jane may have been involved with John’s death since she certainly traveled extensively through western Jackson County during this time period looking for news or information about him while he was still alive but there is no concrete evidence confirming or disproving this theory either….. Sarah Jane Hanks left Illinois after being married against her will to another man before moving back East where she died six months later from pneumonia also unrelated toJohn Harnish….
Herrin was founded in 1881 by John Herrin, a German immigrant. The town was named after the mountain range that lies to the east of it. In 1905, Herrin became the seat of its own county government and in 1916 became a part of DuPage County.
