The national guard in Herrin, Illinois was founded on October 1, 1903. The Guard became an independent agency within the United States government on February 17, 1907. It is one of the oldest and most well-recognized units within the National Guard system in the United States. The history of the National Guard in Herrin began with a small unit called Company C of the First Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. This company was organized on October 1, 1903 by Captain John L. Kapp from Herrin and its members were originally recruited from around Herrin and township of Bloomington. The first unit to serve at Camp Yates located east of town was Company G which was organized on November 10, 1903 under command of Lieutenant Colonel Lewis J. McNaught. The regiment served until it mustered out on December 15, 1912. During its time service at Camp Yates it engaged in many tasks such as practicing law enforcement, providing ambulance services and guarding railroad tracks during times of civil unrest or war conditions. Captain George Witte who later served as Commanding Officer for Company C also served as Battalion Commander for Company G while serving at Camp Yates before he relinquished his commission after two years due to health reasons Later that same year Captain Fenton Bowers took over command from Captain Witte and led Company G during World War I until he relinquished his commission due to illness In 1917 Captain Harry Ahern assumed command over all soldiers with Companies A through F when Army changes formations brigades structure caused by World War I On May 4th 1918 Major General James Hutton relieved Major General Arthur MacArthur Jr., commander designate for 2nd Brigade (3rd Infantry Division) When brigade reorganized 3rd Infantry Division became 8th Brigade (2nd Armored Corps) AfterWorld War II ended armistice bequeathed entire 2nd Armored Corps to United States In 1948 President Harry S Truman activated National Guardsmen from Korea and Vietnam To honor those service members he created Guardsmen Center which now offers education programs about military history In 1957 General Leslie Ramey announced plans to disband Armor Corp effective December 31st 1958 succeeding Armor program which had been started prior To this date there has been no change in Commanding Officer or Headquarters Battery For almost 90 years following organization of company there have been only two Officers present with company commandersabsent when battalion is activated or upon resignation or separation From Date Of Organization til Date Of Dissolution All Soldiers With Full Time Status Were Active And Well Equipped As At September 30 1998 In 1903 there were just six enlisted men in full time status assigned to active duty with companies C through H; all soldiers were stationed at camp Yates east of town while their company commanders remained inactive due to being deployed elsewhere at that time Thereafter all soldiers were garrisoned throughout north central Illinois while their companies underwent various training exercises periods ranging anywhere from one week long drills up to four months long maneuvers These Training Periods usually spanned multiple weekends per month Additionally each Soldier Was equipped With All Appropriate Gearincluding Uniformsand Heaters w/o any special privileges received By Enlisted Men Not Holding Commission At That Time These Unit Training sessions occurred primarily off duty between Friday night and Sunday morning so that officers could participate fully In Local Community Eventsand not spend their days commuting back home Many Officers opined that these type Of Combined Arms Drill Drills Made It More difficult For Our Recruits To Get Personal Attention Which Led To High Turnouts During Years We Served Here supplementedBy Esposito’s Own Militia UnitsThat drilled Outside Our City LimitsDuring That Time periodWhenCompanyGWasOrganizedWe DidNotHave Any School Or Barracks Inside City LimitsOnly ArsenalLocatedCloseToCity Limits Provides Today's LevelOf EducationForUnitOfficersAndMembers alikeToday’s Military PersonnelIncluding NCOsAre Well EducatedOnBoth HomefrontAnd Overseas LevelsArmy Must EquipAllSoldiersWithAll Appropriate EquipmentmainlyFirearmsBut ALSOammunitionAndToolkitsTo Keep ThemReadyFOR ANY eventuality

Herrin is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 553 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bloomingdale–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for General William Herrin, who served in the Union army during the American Civil War and later became a director of the Illinois Central Railroad. The first post office in Herrin was opened in 1872, and its first editor was C.W. Moody. In 1909, the town had a population of 350 residents and it incorporated as a village on November 3 that year. In 1955, Herrin became one of twelve townships to be merged into Normal Township; Normal then annexed most of what remained of Herrin township with about 100 residents leaving to form Herrin Village (now known as Indianola). On February 12, 1959, normal took over all but two parcels from her original village charterholders when they filed for bankruptcy protection; those two parcels were annexed by Bloomingdale on March 1st that year.
