In 1869, the Herrin Marine Company was founded in Herrin, Illinois by Capt. John P. Herrin and his son, Capt. George W. Herrin II. The company became a major player in the Chicago marine industry and exported items such as jars, mugs, figurines, toys and otherFine Art Deco pieces to countries all over the world. The company closed its doors in 1962 but not before leaving an indelible mark on maritime history in Illinois. Herrin is a small town located in McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 2,570 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1869 and incorporated in 1872. In 1924, it merged with neighbouring towns of Herron and Newberry to form a new municipality known as Herrin-Newberry. The name change was due to the merger being considered more appropriate for all three towns combined than having them maintain separate names. The economy of Herrin is mainly agricultural; corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and other crops are grown. There are also some small businesses that specialise in manufacturing or service sectors such as cedar softwood lumber and dog food sales. Most residents work in the local government or business services sector either within the township or outside of it depending on their occupation or location within McHenry County. There are two primary schools in Herrin -grades K-8th grade public school and high school - both of which serve portions of Township 1 (northwest corner) and portions of Township 2 (southwest corner). One high school also serves township residents who attend Grades 9-12th grade through a charter program administered by Lake Zurich School District #309 All three municipalities have one library which provides general information access including materials related to history, culture and community life as well as reference books for specific subject areas

Herrin was founded in 1871 by Daniel Herrin and his wife, Christina. The first post office at Herrin was established in 1872. In 1893, the town had a population of fifty-six people. In 1907, the population increased to seventy-one people and in 1912 it reached one hundred people. The population decreased in the 1920s and 1930s due to World War II and then during the Depression years. After World War II, the town experienced a growth trend until it reached its present size.
