It has been home to a post office since 1871, and to the Herrin Manufacturing Company from 1892-1974. The first permanent settler in what is now Herrin was John Haughey, who arrived there in 1824. He built a cabin on the banks of the Kaskaskia River. The first store in Herrin was established by John Ahern in 1846. In 1870, George Fenton opened a grocery and post office at Herrin. In 1896, J J Hershberger began manufacturing cigars for his father-in-law Abraham Iherman in Herrin. From 1907 until 1974, the company manufactured general aviation parts for model airplanes and other aircraft products at its facility on Twenty Mile Road near Carbondale. The present day town was formed when a group of farmers combined their land into one township on January 1st, 1871 under the name "Herrington Township." The initial plat included only 3 acres of land; however, by 1888 it had grown to include an area of 10 square miles with a population of 2200 people!
