The first store opened in what is now Hazel Crest on May 1, 1846 by Wm Hickey. The store was managed by George McAlester until he sold it to Simeon Fenton on October 16 of that year. At that time, business operations were moved to a new building which still stands today on Main Street (now Johnson Road). On November 15, 1906, a fire destroyed the old schoolhouse which served as both a community center and high school for many years. It reopened in 1907 with grades 7-9 being housed there until 1959 when it became known as the Hazeltine Middle School for girls before finally becoming known as Hazel Crest High School in 2006. This location has been home to many businesses over the years including C & I Pharmacy which operated from 1961-2003; Burt's Bees which started selling products at the original location starting in 1965; and most recently Chili’s restaurant which opened its doors in 2016 adjacent to Hazeltine Middle School
