Hazel Crest is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. Hazel Crest is located on the border of McHenry and Kane Counties. The first settler in Hazel Crest was John Fenton who arrived in 1812. A post office called "Hazel Crest" was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. The community grew rapidly due to its location near the then-new Chicago and Northwestern Railroad line. In 1881, the railroad built a depot at Hazel Crest which served as a major shopping center for the area. By 1907, Hazel Crest had become an incorporated town with a government that included five elected officials including treasurer, sheriff, justice of peace, and editor of the local newspaper. During World War II, Hazel Crest played an important role surrounding Camp Shanks which housed up to 6,000 Japanese American troops during the war effort. The town's citizens donated food and clothing to help provide comfort for those who were incarcerated at Shanks during wartime. After the war ended in 1945-46, many of these soldiers returned home and integrated into civilian life; however some remain living within Hazel Crest today as residents or visitors
