The Hazel Crest National Guard was organized on October 1, 1903. The first national guard unit in Illinois was organized at Hazel Crest under the command of Colonel James A. Robertson. The first military officer to be honorably discharged from the Hazel Crest National Guard was Captain John P. Malone who served with distinction during World War I and World War II. On November 3, 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9102 which authorized the creation of a nationwide civilian militia for general defense purposes as part of the United States War effort against Japan. On December 12, 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated the Hazel Crest National Guard as one of two units within the newly created Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This affiliation allowed for soldiers from both organizations to work together in projects such as building roads and dams across southern Illinois while also providing manpower for other CCC tasks including forestry and mining

Hazel Crest is a small town located in the Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Chicago Metropolitan Area. The population was 590 at the 2010 census. Hazel Crest is part of the Peoria metropolitan area. The name "Hazel Crest" began as a settlement on bluffs overlooking the Sangamon River and was named for an early settler, Mrs. Hazel Halsey, who postulated that she had seen a hazelnut tree before coming to America. In 1847, Hiram Bowen purchased land in what is now Hazel Crest from David Carpenter and erected a log cabin on his farmstead which became known as Bowman's Grove. In 1851, John Bigham founded Richmonds Mills in what is now Hazel Crest and built a flour mill on this site which he operated until 1870 when it went out of business due to competition from nearby Chatham Mills. In 1865, General George Armstrong moved his headquarters from Fort Stephenson to Peoria for the Union Army during the American Civil War and spent two months there before returning home to Hancock County where he resumed operations of his old flour mill near Decatur Street and Greenwood Avenue. In 1868, Beecher & Company opened their brick factory on Main Street in present-day Hazel Crest and continued operation until 1898 when they merged with other brick manufacturers to form The Mason Jar Company of Indianapolis (later renamed JCPenney). -In 1897 A & W Brewing Co., Inc., successor to Beecher & Company opened its first brewery in Hazel Crest by converting an existing garage into beer brewing facilitiesIt remains one of America's oldest brewpubs today with over 80 years' continuous operation -A&W Brewery closed its doors permanently in 1984 after serving customers atits original location since 1897

Hazel Crest is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1868 by John Atherton and his family as Hazelwood. It became an incorporated village in 1903 and an unincorporated community in 1922. The name "Hazel Crest" first appeared on a map of Cook County dated November 7, 1872. In 1889, Haverhill Wagon Works (now known as JBL Contractors) located in Hazel Crest built one of the world's first large-scale wagons, the Haverhill No. 2 wagon. One of its most famous residents was Harvey Firestone who invented the fire truck and also developed what is now known as Ford Model T gasoline engines and other transportation products. He also lived in Hazel Crest for many years until he moved to Dearborn Heights near Chicago in 1954 to work for Ford Motor Company there. Today, Hazel Crest retains some aspects of its pioneer culture such as its annual Pioneer Days celebration which celebrates local history with activities like arts and crafts, music performances and food booths from various restaurants throughout town during Father's Day Weekend; but it has become more diverse with increasing numbers of people coming from all over Illinois to visit its farms, businesses and churches during springtime when cherry blossoms bloom; summer tourist season when many tourists come to see downtownChicago's 417-acre McCormick Place Exhibition Center; fall when apple trees begin blooming; winter when Christmas lights are turned on aroundtown; and occasional performances by local bands or orchestras at venues likethe Community High School auditorium or First Baptist Church amphitheater
