Hazel Crest is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,512 at the 2010 census. Hazel Crest is adjacent to the Village of Hazel Crest and has a combined land area of just over two square miles. It is bordered by Oak Park to the north, West Chicago to the east, and Forest Park to the south. The first settlers in what is now Hazel Crest were farmers who chose this location because of its availability of fresh water resources. The town was founded on February 22, 1881 by George Washington Hickey and his wife Mary Jane Hickey. At that time it consisted of only a few homes and a small mill which produced flour for local merchants. In 1907, when Hazel Crest became part of the new village of Hazelhurst, it grew rapidly due to its close proximity to factories inOak ParkandWest Chicago. By 1930, when Hazel Crest merged with Village of Hazelhurst (renamed Forest Hills), it had reached its peak as an urban center with a population over 12,000 people. In 1960-1961 residents voted to relinquish their right to vote within the city limits in order to make way for development near Interstate 95A. This change led to an increase in crime rates within the city limits as criminals sought out safer areas outside of downtown Hazel Crest. However, today Downtown Hazel Crest remains one of most vibrant neighborhoods in Illinois with strong cultural ties dating back more than 100 years
