Hazel Crest is one of seven towns in Cook County that are part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The other six towns are Arlington Heights, Byron Park, Darien Lake Park, Elmhurst, and River Grove. The history of Hazel Crest begins with settlers who began arriving in what is now Hazel Crest in 1851. One early settler was John C. Daugherty who arrived from Maine and named his property Maple Hill after his family's maple tree near Walden Pond in Massachusetts. In 1854-55 there were five families living at Maple Hill and they soon started to build another home on land they had purchased just east of the current village line which they called "New Beginnings". This new home was built around a large log cabin which served as their first farmstead until it burned down in 1886 when the family moved to a new place on Brown Boulevard just north of present day Hazel Crest Village Limits. The community grew rapidly due to its location close to many mills and markets that supplied commodities such as flour, coffee beans, cotton goods etc., as well as its easy access to transportation via railroads and roads. By 1890 there were twenty homes including four churches with over 100 residents; thirty three businesses; two schools; an ice cream truck parked outside all day long; three miles (5 km) of good track leading into Oak Lawn for freight trains carrying milk products from Butterfield Douglass Creameries; sixteen cows along with their feedlot off Trump Road operated by Mr Donald J Seitzman; two wells donated by Dr Abraham Hirschfeld - one located on White Street behind Presentation Presbyterian Church and the other nearpresent day corner of Brown Boulevard and Trump Road). In 1895 when Jackson Township was formed out of portions of Cook County it included most or all of what now includes Hazel Crest including Jackson Township except for part lying south of presentday Third Avenue across Third Street from presentday White House Stadium where today's First Unitarian Church stands (Hazel Crest also belonged to this township until 1893 when it merged with Dearborn Township). In 1912 President Woodrow Wilson announced plans for America's largest municipally-owned electric company – National Electric Power Corporation – based out of Chicago so that cities could be powered without subsidy from state governments. As a result much development occurred around Hazel Crest during this time including erection of several large factories/plantations such as Bethlehem Steel Works (now Jacobs Engineering), Foster & Lambert Paper Company (later Wacker Paper Company), General Motors Plant No 2 (now Illini Glass), American Telephone & Telegraph Plant No 5 (later Northwestern Bell Laboratories), Sears Roebuck & Co.'s Stout shoe store which opened in 1916 followed by Kresge's grocery store which opened in 1922 before being destroyed by fire in 1951); Staley Bros'. meat market west side open 1927 followed by Albertson's convenience store east side open 1928 while J & L Foods establishement became known as Smith’s Grocery Store following purchase by Morrisons Stores Incorporatedin 1945). All these developments coincided with rapid growth within the city overall due largely to America’s involvement World War I and subsequent economic boom that ensued once hostilities ceased A number of residents decided to move away from Hazel Crest during this time including many men who went off to fight World War II while others chose not to leave because they felt comfortable within the small community . In 1965 Mayor Abe Siegel ordered police Chief Leo Mazzone start investigating complaints about racism within the local police department among some residents although no charges were ever filed resulting in public outcry against Chief Mazzone . Residents voted 3-1/2 years later in favor OFP Jane Byrne becoming mayor after Mayor Siegel resigned effective October 1st 1966 having been term limited . Queen Elizabeth Wright became first female mayorof Chicago following her election on November 8th 1971 after serving two terms totaling nineteen months prior
