The name Harvey is a historic and well-known town in Illinois. The first post office was established in Harvey on November 3, 1881. The population of Harvey was 1,953 at the 2000 census. It is located in Kane County and has a total area of 362 square miles. Harvey was founded by three brothers: John, James and Daniel Harvey. They bought a tract of land north of Chicago for $3,000 from the Penn Central Railroad Company on October 12, 1871. The brothers began to erect homes there and opened the first grocery store in Harvey on December 5, 1871. By 1880, they had built over 100 houses and had several stores and restaurants in operation including the Harvey House Hotel which still stands today. In 1924, Mayor Harry Hays dedicated two blocks of northwest corner Main Street between State street and Michigan Avenue as "The George Washington Boulevard Corridor" in memory of Mr. President's eldest son who died aged 21 while serving as an Air Force pilot during World War I near Cairo Airport outside Chicago (now Midway Airport). At that time only one block east of present day Indiana Street across from Soldier Field would be called "Washington Boulevard".

In 1847-48, Harvey built a flour mill on the south side of the river to process Iowa wheat imported by traders from New York City and Baltimore. The mill produced about one million bushels of flour each year until it stopped production in 1908 because of high costs associated with transporting flour across state lines to market. It reopened as an agricultural fairground starting in 1912 after being abandoned for many years. The fairgrounds also housed a theater which opened in 1916 and closed down in 1978 when the city moved away from using theaters as public venues.
