In 1949, the navy relocated again to Chicago when Truman designated Harvey as the capital of its new military district. The city continued to enjoy a presence in naval life with several submarines operating out of CPSC Chicagoland and two destroyers moored at Pierpont Harbor. In 1998, Hurricane Katrina caused significant damage to local maritime infrastructure and employment within the city limits disappeared for many months as cleanup began. However, by September 2002, major restoration efforts had resumed and downtown was repopulated with businesses from surrounding neighborhoods including Harveys largest commercial development since World War II (the former Mooney’s Bar). Today, Harvey is home to one Destroyer Squadron (DesRon 9) and thirteen submarines operating under Commander Third Fleet- Houston District-Harvey-Lake Charles region totaling over 1 million square feet (9300 m2) of office space including four large amphibious assault ships and seventeen small boats used for special warfare missions ashore or afloat

Harvey, Illinois is a small town in the St. Clair County area of Illinois. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Chicago River and is bordered by Joliet to the north, Northbrook to the east, Harvey to the south and Toole to the west. The village of Harvey was platted in 1814 as part of a large tract that was granted to General James Wilkinson by Governor Simon Belcher. The land included all of what is now Harvey and parts of what is now Joliet. Upon confirmation of its platting by Secretary of State John Prentiss in 1816, Harvey became one of 25 villages founded along with Bloomington, Normal, Moline and Decatur in recognition of Joseph Champney's drive for development in central Illinois during this period. In 1824, General James Wilkinson renamed his new settlement after himself: "Harrison". By 1830, Harrison had become an important transportation hub on the St. Clair River due to its location near several mills owned by Andrew Jackson (President from 1828-1829). In 1834, when Harrison's post office opened under direction from Amos Kendall (Ulysses S. Grant's first secretary), it served as an important node between Chicago and Quincy on Lake Michigan. In 1840–41 Daniel Webster led a congressional delegation through Harrison to celebrate Indian removal policy becoming effective following their visit there; they were so impressed that they ordered local officials responsible for providing food for Native Americans throughout their territory relocate immediately without reimbursement or famine relief provisions should hostilities break out again (the event known as "The Great White Way Expedition"). This canal made Harvey more important and led to its growth as a trade center for goods traveling between Chicago and other states. In 1860, an act was passed that gave land to the citizens of Harvey for development purposes. This act allowed for new businesses and homes to be erected on the town's land and created jobs for local people.
