The Harvey region of Illinois was first settled by the Potawatomi in 1811. After 1945, it slowly regained some importance as an economic development zone thanks to new industrial projects such as aluminum smelting and shipbuilding (the latter becoming an important factor in reviving local businesses following their bankruptcy during the 1990s). Today, Harvey is still an important bedroom community for Chicago with over 10% of all residents living within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Chicagoland.
